Hello everyone, and welcome to Your English Update, a podcast by EZOnlineEnglish.

Have you ever been to the doctor and you didn’t know how to explain what was wrong in English? It’s important to be able to speak clearly and directly to your doctor, so you can get the care you need! This episode aims to give you some common expressions that you can use to talk to your doctor about your symptoms. Ready? Let’s go!

I have a sore throat and it hurts when I swallow.

我喉咙痛,吞口水时很疼。

You may use this expression when you have a cold. Usually the cause of a sore throat is swollen tonsils, so the doctor may ask about them as well as ask you to open your mouth so they can see them. If it is serious, they may ask to swab the back of your throat to test for other illnesses.

I have a bad cough that won’t go away.

我咳得厉害,就是好不了。

If you have a cold, you may also need this expression too. If your cough is severe, you will most likely say that you have a bad cough while including some additional information about it. For example, “I have a bad cough and it really hurts.” Or, “I have a bad cough and water isn’t helping.”

My bowel movements are not regular.

我大便不规律。

This expression means that you are having trouble going to the bathroom. To describe the digestion process, we use the word regular to mean it is healthy. If your bowel movements aren’t regular, then it means that they are unpredictable. It means you have either constipation or diarrhea.

My muscles are sore and achy.

我肌肉酸痛。

If you have the flu or some virus similar to it, then your body will most likely feel sore. You can describe this feeling using the word achy. Other common symptoms that go along with body aches are having a fever as well as having the chills.

I can’t walk on my ankle. I think it is fractured.

我脚踝不能走路了,我想是骨折了。

A fracture is a small crack in the bone. It is not actually a complete break, but it’s still painful! If you tripped or rolled your ankle, it is possible to fracture it. The doctor may need to take an x-ray to make sure, and you can ask this question if you need to, “Can we take an x-ray to see if it fractured?”

Alright, it is time for the review. Let’s see if you remember all of the expressions from this lesson!
