Continuing off of the theme of the last two episodes on the bank, this lesson is about idioms related to money! And we are throwing in an extra expression for you this week. That’s right! We are learning six different idioms today, and we will also be providing example sentences to help you remember all of them. Okay, are you ready? Let’s go!
I’m flat broke.
我身无分文。
If you are flat broke, then it means that you are completely out of money. Zero. None. You have nothing! A related idiom is, “to break the bank,” which means that something costs so much that you spend all of your money and break the bank. Therefore, if you are broke, then you did break the bank essentially. You spent all of your money, and now you don’t have anything!
Sorry, I can’t go out. I’m flat broke until Friday!
It costs an arm and a leg.
这要花一大笔钱。
This idiom means that something is really expensive. It is so expensive in fact that you didn’t pay money for it, you had to pay with one of your arms and one of your legs! Saying it costs an arm and a leg implies that the item is beyond what you are able to pay, and paying for it could hurt you and your wallet.
My new car cost an arm and a leg, but it’s worth it!
That money is burning a hole in my pocket.
我真的很想花这笔钱。
If money is burning a hole in your pocket, it means that you really want to spend money once you get it. You need to get it out of your pocket quickly before it burns you! This idiom implies that you have trouble saving money because you’re always ready to spend it.
You want to go shopping again? That money is burning a hole in your pocket!
He’s making a killing at trading crypto.
他在加密货币交易上可是赚了大钱。
“To make a killing at something,” means that you are making a lot of money doing it. It is profitable! You can use it for anything such as reselling clothes, selling cars, trading stock–-whatever you’re doing to make money!
I heard she’s making a killing at selling jewelry online.
I’m struggling to make ends meet right now.
我现在正勉强维持生计。
“To struggle to make ends meet,” means to have trouble affording your monthly bills. It means you have little to no money. You don’t have enough to make it from one end of the month to the next.
I didn’t want to admit it, but we are struggling to make ends meet right now.
I’m in between paychecks.
我还没发工资，现在手头很紧。
This idiom is related to the last one! If you are in between paychecks, it means that you don’t have any money until you get paid again.Your budget is tight.You are waiting for payday, so you can have some more money in your account.
Sorry, I can’t go out to the bar tonight. I’m in between paychecks.
