Last Episode in April! See you in May! From an early age, we’re taught that lying is bad. But, is it? What drives someone to lie? Is all lying inherently bad? How does lying intersect with our internal struggles and vulnerabilities? These are just a few questions I had before my conversation with Tom. There are a lot of reasons as to why someone may lie. But here's the thing - lying isn't a black-and-white issue, especially when it comes to individuals grappling with eating disorders. There's a profound connection between lying, shame, and vulnerability in this context. Tom Wooldridge, PsyD, ABPP, CEDS-S is Chair in the Department of Psychology at Golden Gate University as well as a psychoanalyst and board-certified, licensed psychologist. He has published journal articles and book chapters on topics such as eating disorders, masculinity, technology, and psychoanalytic treatment. He has written 3 books including, Understanding Anorexia Nervosa in Males (2016), Psychoanalytic Treatment of Eating Disorders: When Words Fail and Bodies Speak (2018), and Eating Disorders (New Introductions to Contemporary Psychoanalysis) (2022). Tweetable Quotes “How do we understand someone's relationship with the truth in a much more complex way as opposed to just saying ‘Well that's just someone's eating disorder.’” - Rachelle Heinemann "Often people have a kind of outward presentation of indifference or commitment to whatever behavior they're engaged in. But maybe, just maybe there's ambivalence in there." - Tom Wooldridge "You could say, well, there is a 0.5% chance that you'll die of the coronavirus. Well, that's just gonna make a kid anxious. What they need to hear is, no honey, it's gonna be okay." - Tom Wooldridge "I don't rule out that [confrontation] could never be productive. But for most patients, most of the time, they're lying for reasons." - Tom Wooldridge "Most of the time I would hope to get to a place where we could speak about the deception, but usually only after quite a bit of groundwork has been laid." - Tom Wooldridge Resources Grab the replay of my Basics of Assessment and Early Treatment of Eating Disorder Webinar Grab my Journal Prompts here! Pregnancy is beautiful (for some). Postpartum is raw. There is so much more to a person’s fertility journey than just pregnancy. But there seems to be a universal narrative surrounding pregnancy - the glow, the anticipation, the miracle of life. But what about what comes next? As a mother myself, I've experienced firsthand the pressures of bounce-back culture. It's everywhere - from social media ads to casual conversations. The expectation to quickly return to your pre-pregnancy body after carrying a human for 40 weeks and giving birth is, quite frankly, absurd. In this episode, I am joined by Pam Skop. She is a licensed mental health counselor, certified eating disorder specialist, registered yoga teacher, and postpartum doula. Pam owns EveryBody Psychotherapy NYC, a psychotherapy private practice in New York City focusing on working with those with eating disorders, disordered eating, body image, trauma, and the perinatal period from a holistic, individualized, and embodied approach. Tweetable Quotes "There's obviously so much to any person's fertility journey, whether it starts from way, way, way before anybody gets pregnant." - Rachelle Heinemann “There's so much more that's going on with a woman's body postpartum, whether it's physically, hormonally, emotionally, I mean, you name it, there is a ton." - Rachelle Heinemann "Your body might not ever go back and I think is so, so difficult." - Rachelle Heinemann "I love that we're talking about this idea of expectation because I think so much of where this can be challenging for people and where sort of like emotional struggles come in is when the expectation and the reality do not match up to each other." - Pam Skop "It takes a village, that's sort of what everybody knows. And so it is important to reach out for more support." - Rachelle Heinemann Resources Grab the replay of my Basics of Assessment and Early Treatment of Eating Disorder Webinar Grab my Journal Prompts here! Has the eating disorder community pushed the envelope a little too far? It's a nuanced conversation, one that doesn't lend itself to easy answers. As we endorse concepts like health at every size, intuitive eating, and body love, are we inadvertently alienating those who need our message the most? At the core of it all lies a fundamental question: How did we get here, and what can we do to prevent further suffering? Tweetable Quotes "All foods are morally equal, which means that you're not a good person for eating salad and you're not a bad person for having chocolate." - Rachelle Heinemann "Intuitive eating is not going to help you if you suffer from a binge eating disorder." - Rachelle Heinemann "Some people love the idea of being able to eventually love their body and really appreciate their body." - Rachelle Heinemann Resources Grab the replay of my Basics of Assessment and Early Treatment of Eating Disorder Webinar Grab my Journal Prompts here! When we talk about eating disorders, the conversation often revolves around body image – from the harmful effects of body shaming to the empowering message of body positivity. But there's another aspect of this conversation that often goes overlooked: beauty ideals. There are so many tough questions to answer: Is there such a thing as a "perfect" beauty standard? How does makeup fit into the narrative of body positivity? Can beauty ideals coexist with self-love? And most importantly, how can we redefine beauty on our own terms? In this episode, I’m joined by my dear friend, Nechami Tennenbaum. Nechami isn't a typical guest on the show – she's not a clinician or a therapist, but her journey is just as fascinating. She is the founder and CEO of Defiance Beauty, a high-performance, natural cosmetics brand that celebrates diversity and inclusivity in the beauty industry. Tweetable Quotes "If you're able to look in the mirror and point out things that you're appreciative of, then you're already ahead of the game." - Rachelle Heinemann "I want every woman to feel seen and feel visible... when you see yourself, you don't have to start changing your body or changing your face to look like someone else." - Nechami Tennenbaum "There's something so powerful about feeling like we belong that allows us to be individuals." - Rachelle Heinemann "Unfollow if someone's making you feel lost." - Nechami Tennenbaum Resources Grab the replay of my Basics of Assessment and Early Treatment of Eating Disorder Webinar Grab my Journal Prompts here! Everyone knows Ozempic. Everyone wants Ozempic. There’s a sea of misinformation out there because medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro have become so popular. But the real question is why? These aren’t necessarily brand-new medications but lately, we’ve seen them “prescribed” right and left and it leaves us wondering if it’s something we should consider. What are these medications for? Who should use them? Who shouldn’t use them? What are the side effects? Are we using them correctly? Is there a better way to navigate these medications? What’s the impact on other aspects of people’s lives? What are the consequences in the larger society? In this episode, I’m joined by Laura Cipullo, a seasoned registered dietitian, diabetes care and education specialist, and all-around wellness guru (the real wellness, like overall wellness not just weight = wellness thing.). Together, we're unpacking the science behind GLP-1s, demystifying their role in regulating blood sugar, promoting weight loss, and even delaying stomach emptying. Tweetable Quotes "Everyone's body is so different. Everyone's metabolism is different. Everyone's microbiome is different." - Laura Cipullo "I shouldn't judge you, shouldn't judge the eating disorder community, shouldn't be judging the people that are in whatever body right? We need to talk to them and see what is it that you're experiencing." - Laura Cipullo "I don't think we have enough science for us to even really know like half of what's going on inside somebody." - Laura Cipullo "We live in a world, especially within the eating disorder treatment community, that if you say the word obesity, you are already deemed as something bad, which is kind of a little silly because if there's a word out there, we can't ban it." - Rachelle Heinemann Resources Connect with Laura on her website - https://lauracipullo.com/ Connect with Laura on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/LauraCipullo/ Grab the replay of my Basics of Assessment and Early Treatment of Eating Disorder Webinar Grab my Journal Prompts here! “Here’s what I eat in a day as an *insert social media influencer title here*” If you’re active on social media, chances are you have scrolled through posts like these. Whether they are “what I eat in a day” or “what I earn in a month” or whatever it may be, they are so common but to be honest, a little toxic. Tweetable Quotes "For the most part, every single person that I talk to when they get off social media, they feel worse about themselves, mostly because of this comparison trap." - Rachelle Heinemann "There's so much that goes into every decision to put something in your mouth, to not eat something, to work out, to not work out. How do you do it? Why do you do it?"- Rachelle Heinemann "Even if we understand something logically, it doesn't necessarily mean that we can actually implement something different to make us feel better." - Rachelle Heinemann Resources Grab my Journal Prompts here! There’s a fine line between disordered eating and an eating disorder. These are terms we’ve all heard, but have you ever stopped to consider the difference between these labels? Better yet, does it truly matter what the difference is? Tweetable Quotes “I think that when we narrow ourselves into boxes and say, this needs to be labeled as disordered eating or an eating disorder, we pigeonhole ourselves, we pigeonhole our clients and their recovery or self-growth healing journey.” - Rachelle Heinemann "The way that I like to see a relationship with food is on a continuum." - Rachelle Heinemann Resources Grab my Journal Prompts here! “You don’t look like you would have an eating disorder.” Crazier things have never been said. Here’s the thing, eating disorders don’t have a look. It’s a myth that eating disorders are typically portrayed by a “skinny” individual. But the reality is far from that stereotype. Eating disorders can affect anyone, regardless of their outward appearance. They don't discriminate based on size, shape, or weight. Tweetable Quotes "When eating disorders were portrayed in the media, they said ‘If you don't look like this, you don't have an eating disorder’ and what's really ridiculous about that is that the majority of people who struggle with eating disorders actually don't look like that." - Rachelle Heinemann "If we think about what an eating disorder looks like, there is no such thing." - Rachelle Heinemann "The ultimate goal is for us to create some sort of harmony that if this is what you present on the outside, at the very least, you feel somewhat similar internally." - Rachelle Heinemann "What is so incredible about the recovery journey is that it doesn't have to be the biggest disconnect between your insides and your outsides." - Rachelle Heinemann Resources Grab my Journal Prompts here! Parenthood can be both beautiful and stressful. Firstly, it’s okay to admit that. There are no sick days, there is no PTO, you work 24/7 shifts and you get paid nothing. It’s sometimes a thankless job, and you’ll never get a break. But, it’s the toughest job you will ever love. If we really dive into the rut of parenting, it can feel incredibly overwhelming, and sometimes it’s enough to send someone into a downward spiral. However, it’s hard to prepare for something like this. Until you actually become a parent, you can’t really explain to someone what it’s like to be one. In this epsiode, I'm sitting down with Dina Cohen, and discussing all things parenthood and eating disorders. Dina Cohen, MS, RDN, CEDS-C is a nutrition therapist who specializes in pediatric nutrition and the treatment of eating disorders. She is the founder of EatWellSoon, a nutrition counseling practice in Lakewood, NJ dedicated to helping individuals and families develop lifelong healthy habits and a positive relationship with food. Dina's favorite thing to do is help prevent eating disorders before they ever happen, and she speaks in schools, pediatrician's offices, and mental health clinics about eating disorder prevention and awareness. Dina lives with her husband, four daughters, and lots of talking in Toms River, NJ, where she learns new things about food every day. Tweetable Quotes "It's definitely true that kids are on a different timeline starting from when they're newborn." - Dina Cohen "Recovery from an eating disorder is so, so hard, but you're really getting your bang for your buck because it's going to make other things in your life easier and better." - Dina Cohen "I've found it pretty helpful is that beforehand, before the crisis happens, think about how you can be flexible in upcoming situations." - Rachelle Heinemann "Sometimes we have these hangups of, I want my kids to be nourished well, I want them to have foods with lots of nutrients, a whole balanced meal, and sometimes, maybe, all the time, when you have lots of kids running around, it's really hard to do that." - Rachelle Heinemann "If mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy, and you have to make the time for yourself because otherwise it's not just you who's going to suffer, everybody's going to suffer." - Dina Cohen Resources Basics of Assessing & Treating Eating Disorders Webinar Grab my Journal Prompts here! Weight loss and Eating disorder treatments? Pft. Talk to the hand. Okay, let me clarify. This used to be my point of view. I couldn’t quite understand how these two topics really played into each other. Now, I don’t necessarily disagree, but I do think this is a lot more complex, and it’s far from black and white. We should be exploring questions around the perception that excessive weight is a health problem, the dangers of intentional weight loss, and the conversations that uncover this controversial topic. Tweetable Quotes "Weight is not synonymous with health; it's a significant factor but only one part of the bigger picture of someone's well-being." - Rachelle Heinemann "If anybody so much as said the phrase weight loss and eating disorder treatment, or even just weight loss and health together, I'd just be like, talk to the hand." - Rachelle Heinemann "Even if you're put in a position where it is imperative to lose weight for your health, going on a restrictive diet is not going to be the answer." - Rachelle Heinemann "Your point on the BMI chart on that bell curve doesn't inherently determine your health, but it is one point. And this is the key, that weight is not synonymous with health, but weight is a very big factor in determining part of the bigger picture of someone's health." - Rachelle Heinemann Resources Basics of Assessing & Treating Eating Disorders Webinar Grab my Journal Prompts here!
