Hit photography podcast network This Week in Photo joins the SmugMug family.
The most important voice in photo podcasting joins the most influential brand in photography.
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – (Oct 25, 2022) – SmugMug, the world’s most influential name in photography, has announced two strategic additions to their expanding family of brands: This Week in Photo (TWiP), the beloved photography podcast network and media powerhouse; and its Editor in Chief, professional photographer, and industry influencer Frederick Van Johnson, who joins SmugMug to lead content and new media while continuing to grow and evolve This Week in Photo.
“It’s an ideal match,” says SmugMug+Flickr VP of Marketing Scott Kinzie. “Our purpose at SmugMug is building a better world through the power of photography, and This Week in Photo has been inspiring, educating, and connecting photographers for more than a decade. Naturally, we’re massive fans of [Johnson’s] work.”
“Frankly, it’s time for TWiP to evolve,” Johnson adds. “I’ve built a wonderful podcast and community of photographers, but I believe TWiP can reach many more photographers, produce more amazing content, and expand the dialogue around photography — and its impact on our world. I just had to find the right team to work with, and SmugMug is the obvious choice because of its unprecedented brand recognition and reach into the photography industry.’
SmugMug is well known for working tirelessly to increase the influence and impact of photography worldwide. From its acquisition of Flickr in 2018 to its award-winning series SmugMug Films, the brand is showing no signs of slowing down.
“We’re among very few truly photographer-centric brands worldwide,” says Kinzie. “We’re always looking for opportunities to support these cornerstones of the photographic community, so when we realized Frederick shared our vision for the future of photography, it became clear that this relationship was great not only for photographers but also for the art of photography itself.”
This Week in Photo, or “TWiP” as it’s known affectionately by fans, is an accessible media powerhouse with regular podcasts, blogs, and an active community covering the many facets of our industry. Since 2008, professional photographer and marketer Frederick Van Johnson has honed the TWiP brand and network, which now boasts weekly photo critiques, interviews, courses, tech reviews, and more.
Johnson is uniquely situated to start meaningful conversations in the photography community and has seen a lot of change over the years. From his transformative tour of duty, serving as a decorated combat photojournalist with the United States Air Force, to marketing and product work with industry giants like Adobe, Yahoo!, and Apple.
“A decade ago, it was all about gear and the latest tech,” he says. “They also wanted to know how to build a portfolio or gallery with the tools of the time. People still love their gear, but today we’re increasingly seeing folks get into business, trying to make a go of it as a pro photographer. I've long admired SmugMug's commitment to empowering photographers since signing up in 2004. I’m stoked to join them in their mission of getting more photographers informed, inspired, and entertained—it’s the opportunity of a lifetime.”

This week on the show we feature Hawaiian photographer Kyle Nishioka. A relative newcomer to glamour photography, Kyle has leveraged his technical excellence to create a bounty of superb images. Not limited to glamour, within moments of visiting his website, you will find a variety of well-executed genres.
Posing to enhance shape
In the world glamour, photographers fight a constant battle to make the shapely seem thin and the thin seem curvaceous. In this episode, we
tackle bringing the hourglass shape to the slender model. Kyle does an excellent job of demonstrating a strategy of raising the model's arms to narrow the waist. This posing strategy also gives the model stronger shoulders and a look of confidence. We hope you experiment with this pose in your next shoot and send us your results. But be warned, this pose can exaggerate the model's armpit if not managed carefully.

On this episode, Adelaide photographer Rob Jenkins joins us to share his love of photography. Diverse and dynamic, Rob's work stands out as well executed and thoughtful. Never settling into one genre, we see examples of wedding, portraiture, fashion and glamour. Of particular interest in his work is use of tonal extremes to convey the feeling of an image. Reaching beyond taking pictures, Rod also hosts a photography meet-up group, runs events and publishes the new and impressive "Photo Live" magazine.
We greatly enjoyed our interview with Rob and look forward to keeping tabs on his photographic journey.
Photo Live Magazine
In an act of publishing madness, Rob has begun to publish "Photo Live" e-magazine. The first issue has made a splash for being beautifully produces, well written and completely free of ads. Over 200 pages of images and thoughtful interviews with the prominent image makers of our time. The first issue includes interviews from Scott Bourne, Nick Ghionis, Jim Harmer and many more!

This week on the show Gary Abigt shows us the secrets to building a portfolio in a day. Gary is the owner and operator of Select Models, one of the longest-running and most prolific modeling group shoot companies.
Gary's love affair with photography began as a child, following the career of his uncle, a renowned speedway photographer. During high school his talents began to blossom and thanks to an infusion of professional gear Gary made the move to paying assignments. After high school, Gary completed a distinguished tour with the United States Air Force as an alert photographer. He then transitioned into commercial and portrait work. After attending a photography group shoot with a friend, the fire was lit and Select Models was born.
With over 400 Group shoots to his name, endless energy and a passion for people, we are happy to bring you Gary Abigt.
Waterworld photo shoots
The Waterworld photo shoots take place in an unassuming suburban neighborhood. This neiborhood is hiding a photography gem. Gary's residence is a photographers dream come true with foliage, rock formations, Jacuzzis, swimming pools and everything in between, all packed into a suburban backyard. The Waterworld photo shoots are affordable, enjoyable and well worth your time.
The cruise boat photo shoot
With 10 successful voyages completed, the cruise boat photo shoot is a proven winner. Gary and his band of models and photographers take over a corner of a cruise ship and use it as a photo studio on the waves. From an organizers perspective, the real genius of this concept is that the cruise line takes care of all of the difficult preparations, without even knowing it. The set up a simple, each photographer sponsors a model to go on the cruise. This guarantees an almost perfect ratio of models and photographers. It also attracts a very high caliber of model without a large investment by the photographer.
