EP 8 - Myths and misconceptions of strokes
Welcome to our latest episode of the podcast where we delve into the fascinating and often misunderstood world of stroke care. We're joined today by two distinguished specialists from the Royal London Hospital, Dr Paul Bhogal and Dr Oliver Spooner. Dr Bhogal is a consultant interventional and diagnostic neuroradiologist, who made headlines in September 2020 for performing the world's first aneurysm surgery whilst the patient was awake. Dr Spooner is a consultant stroke physician and mechanical thrombectomy lead for stroke medicine. Together, they bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table. In this episode, we explore some of the myths and misconceptions around stroke care. We discuss why strokes can happen to anyone, not just elderly and unhealthy people, and what we can all do to reduce our risk of having a stroke. We also look at why some people's brains are better protected against the worst effects of a stroke than others. We wrap up our conversation with a discussion about life after a serious stroke, which can often be life-changing for both the patient and their loved ones. Dr Bhogal and Dr Spooner share their insights on how families can support stroke survivors without infantilising them, and help them to rebuild their lives in the best way possible. Join us for this enlightening and thought-provoking conversation with two leading experts in the field of stroke care. EP 6 - Saving lives after death through organ and tissue donation
In this episode of Treating You we spoke to Lisa Wilson. Lisa sits on The Royal London Hospital’s organ donation committee. She has been involved in a project to create an organ donation memorial sculpture in memory of loved ones who have donated at Barts Health. However, the reason why Lisa sits on this committee is a very tragic one. In December 2015, Lisa’s son Tom who was 22 years old at the time was playing the sport he loved hockey when he was hit on the back of the head in a training session. Tom then suffered a brain haemorrhage and had a heart attack on the pitch. Despite his team mates performing CPR on him, when he was brought to hospital, Lisa was told by the doctors in charge that he would be certified brain dead in 12 hours. Lisa asked to see an organ donor nurse after being asked if she would consider organ donation. Lisa was told that Tom had signed up to the organ donation register as a first-year student at Nottingham Trent university. Even more tragically for Lisa, 2 months after Tom died, her husband Graham also suddenly died from sepsis. Graham asked Lisa before he died to keep Tom’s memory alive and she is doing just that. Thanks to Tom, his organ and tissue donation have saved and improved the lives of up to 50 people. Lisa has since met two recipients of Tom’s organs including a girl called Fatima who had part of Tom’s liver and a gentleman called Gordon who received Tom’s heart who was 60 at the time, he is now 66. In 2019, to honour his memory, two batons bearing his name were presented at that year's Westfield Health British Transplant Games in Newport, and the World Transplant Games in Newcastle. One of which is on display in the foyer at Tom’s old school, The Coopers Company & Coborn School. In this episode we talk about her journey of grief, the young man Tom was and the husband and father Graham was and the advocacy work Lisa does now on organ donation and why its so important more people sign up to the register. This is Lisa’s…and Tom’s story of how he gave people life after his tragic death. EP 4 - Clean Air Day

Our guests are Dr Anna Moore, east London resident Kevin White and local councillor Clyde Loakes. Anna is a respiratory doctor currently working at a clinic dedicated to breathlessness here at Barts Health. Living close to a major road linking central London to east London, Kevin moved to Greenwich for hopes of a greener environment. Finally, Clyde Loakes is Waltham Forest’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment and has been Councillor for the Leytonstone Ward in Waltham Forest for the past 23 years. EP 2 - Living with PMDD
In the second episode of Treating You we spoke to learning and development facilitator at Barts Health, Annika Waheed. Annika lives with a health condition called Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). This condition only affects females and is a more severe form of Premenstrual Syndrome or PMS that many women can experience. Symptoms of PMDD are similar to PMS but are much more intense and can have a much greater negative impact on your daily activities and quality of life. Some of these symptoms can include physical symptoms such as cramps, headaches and joint and muscle pain, behavioural symptoms such as binge eating and problems sleeping and mental or emotional symptoms, such as feeling very anxious, angry, depressed or, in some cases, even suicidal. Annika’s life has at times been severely impacted by PMDD. She suffered a breakdown just before the Covid-19 pandemic started and has struggled at various points since that moment. In this episode we explore how Annika began to experience PMDD symptoms, the taboo that women face who live with it and what initiatives we’re doing at the Trust to support women like Annika who live with it. April 2022 is PMDD awareness month so after listening to this pod, we hope you listeners go away and read up on this health condition and how you can do your bit to get involved in raising awareness or supporting women in your life who might have it.
