Here's my interview in English with my bilingual children. It was weird to talk to them in English for such a long time, since I only speak to them in Portuguese. Here's what's like living in two languages in our household.
If you want to get the whole audiovisual experience, head over to the video version of this interview to see us interacting in the live recording, which includes a couple more minutes of content that only works once you have the visuals, and there is even some blooper reel at the end of the episode as well.

As we wrap up Season 1 of Translation Confessional, I'd like to turn the microphone over to the listeners and share their stories and voice messages. Thank you so much for your support throughout this crazy year! Podcasting has kept me sane through social distancing, the kids' remote and hybrid schooling, and a pretty heavy workload since the pandemic hit. I really appreciate all of you being out there and listening to what I had to share about the ins and outs of working as a professional translator for over two decades! We have two more episodes to go―and they'll be a little different!―and then we'll get ready for Season 2 in early January, 2021.

Last week, I had an Instagram Live with Laila Rezende Compan, translator, subtitler, and creator of Tradutor Iniciante―a blog, Instagram account, and YouTube channel dedicated to beginner translators in Brazil. She invited me to be in one of her weekly live interviews and we talked about IT translations.
At first, I thought, “What am I going to say about specializing in translations for the Information Technology segment? It sounds so boring…” As soon as I started seeing the questions coming in as comments to the original post announcing the interview, things became clearer and I knew how to approach the subject in a way that translators who haven’t worked with IT could understand what this specialized field is all about.

Let’s talk about something that has been increasingly happening to translators and interpreters nowadays―we’re being targeted by scammers. I have a video on two kinds of scammers that have been targeting our industry for years: SCAM ALERT!
Now, in this episode, I wanted to build on the subject and go a little further into other types of scams we may fall for, professionally or even personally.

A few weeks ago, on episode 27, I talked about using social media to our advantage as professional translators and interpreters. I mentioned how I emphasize on etiquette when brainstorming ways my students can add social media to their marketing strategy, because it’s important to me that they understand that being behind a screen doesn’t change the fact that we must interact with others respectfully―especially if you’re presenting yourself as a professional. So, I would like to build on that thought today and share some examples of things you should NOT do on social media, whether professionally or personally.

Today’s episode will perhaps feel a little different from what you’ve listened to so far at Translation Confessional, so please bear with me.
This episode is being released five days before the 2020 election in the United States. I thought I should record it now because it feels very timely.
I’m afraid that, depending on the election results and how the electoral process takes place this time around, my judgment may be too clouded, and I may be too mentally exhausted to sit down and record something about this topic in the near future.
So, once again, please bear with me.

I’m releasing this quick episode today because we are exactly one week away from the end of the 2020 elections in the United States right now.
Earlier this month, I was interviewed by Slate Magazine for their “What Next” podcast, because they identified me on social media as a first-time voter and wanted to share my story in their series dedicated to exactly that: people who are voting for the first time in a U.S. election.
If you want to listen to the interview and learn more about why I became a U.S. citizen this year and registered to vote, go to http://bit.ly/Rafa-Slate
I’m also adding the link to this episode’s description, so you can click it and go directly to State’s What Next episode.
I hope you enjoy listening to it and come back on Thursday for episode 44, when I’ll talk about “An Immigrant’s Nightmare,” which is somewhat connected to my Slate interview.

Just the other day, I was talking to a friend about our kids’ education. Reflecting on my academic experience through elementary, middle, and high school got me thinking: I’ve always been a nerd and loved learning new things. So, yes, I’m an advocate for lifelong learning, and I do learn new things every day while doing my job. But I’m also an advocate for matching the right people with the right projects, which is not only is part of our client education efforts, but should always be a reminder for translators and interpreters of our role as agents of communication and, as students, when it comes to seeking knowledge from trusted sources while we continue to improve ourselves.
