Sports washing. From 1934 to 2022
In light of the recent sanctioning of the Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich by the European Union and the British Government, we decided to cover the topic of sports washing.  The term was coined by Amnesty International due to the recent phenomena of using sports to launder reputations by nation states, corporations and individuals. In this episode the host begins by covering sports washing in 1930s Europe which was also a period of widespread fascism. The segment covers fascist Italy and Germany and how those two regimes used sports to clean up their reputations. The second segment covers sports washing during the cold war especially East Germany. The episode concludes by covering the involvement of drug cartels in Football/soccer in Colombia in the 80s and 90s, and also sports washing in the modern era . The modern era includes nation states hosting sports events like the world cup and also purchasing sports teams especially in the English Premier League.
