This episode is simple and complex. This episode is funny and serious. This episode is no frills and incredibly special. Just like in life, sometimes you just want to talk to your grandma – and that what I did. I had a conversation with my grandmother and recorded it.

So this week I bring back our “On” series. This is where I talk about important transitions in my life and hopefully make them relatable to you and your transition. So, this is my birthday week! Feel free to send gifts, cards and well wishes. But no pressure! So, I figured with would be a great opportunity to share my perspectives on getting old. By no means is this an episode bemoaning the aging process or lamenting all the things that I didn’t do or didn’t accomplish – y’all know me better than that! But what this IS are my observations and changes related to me getting older mentally, physically and emotionally.

So, I had a realization that I like to accept challenges. Accepting challenges allows me to improve, grow and learn. Accepting challenges is a way for me to get out of my comfort zone and keep making progress towards my overall goal of total world domination. Accepting challenges is also a way to test myself and to put new knowledge, skills and abilities into action. Lastly, accepting challenges is a great way to connect with people and PROVE that we have more in common that we do in difference. So, I dedicate this episode to Barney Stinson, played by Neil Patrick Harris, from How I Met Your Mother.
Here are some of the benefits of accepting challenges:
Opportunity
Personal satisfaction
Increased community
Creation
Fun and adventure or The Newness

Earlier this week I was channel surfing and I came across of my favorite movie’s, Barry Gordy’s the Last Dragon. Then it dawned on me that that movie was indeed all about transitions. And even more specifically, it was about knowing without knowing and action without thought. How do you actually know when you’ve made it to the next level? How do you know when you’ve achieved your goal?
This week we talk about the traits of the Last Dragon:
Hard work and dedication
Curiosity
Perseverance
Service to self and others
Humility
Continuous learning
Self-belief or confidence
Community
Bravery
Well-defined destination

"We all have a plan until we get punched in the mouth", said Mike Tyson. Now for us regular folks dealing with transitions - getting punched in the mouth can be equated to missing a deadline, not accomplishing a goal, blowing a commitment or missing a milestone. The question then becomes, "how do you deal with those situations?" While the answers will vary based on our experiences, I'm willing to bet we share the following related emotions:
Fear and anxiety
Confusion and embarrassment
Self-judgement and guilt
Blame
Comfort
Listen in to find out more about how me missing a publication deadline turned into this week's episode!

So, I’ve used this analogy before, being in transition can be a lot like planning a trip or vacation. There are unknowns, there are wants, there are desires, and there is a specific outcome in mind. It is your destination that guides you, leads you, and provides the proof that you’re on the right track. This is true regardless of your transition type.
I want to share a list of things you can do or try to help you choose that goal, direction, destination or passion. What ever you call it, I’m talking about the thing that will help guide you during your transition.
Assessments
Look to hobbies
Ask other people
Visualize the future
Make lists – consider open-ended questions
Get a coach or counselor

Being in the Moment isn’t easy, especially in today’s world of “always being on” and being “ ultra-accessible”. However, if you are in the moment more – you will also thrive in your transition more.
Here is a list of things that might help you along your journey of “Being in the Moment”:
Take a break from social media and/or technology
Journaling
Visualize (daily goals)
Wander – get out in nature
Gratitude ball – or some other routine to show or demonstrate your gratitude
Review your day
Meditation
Laugh – there is no shame in laughter
Play – yes, the obvious. But also turn mundane or difficult tasks into games
Breathe
Spend time with your community – people who make you fill happy, encouraged and fulfilled
Exercise – yoga, Pilates, running/jogging, martial arts
Focus on one thing at a time – what’s the next step?

Rewards, I’ve found, are everything in a transition! As you’re in the thick of it – as you’re doing the work – it can be hard to realize the amazing things you’ve done. I’ll go even further and say most of us won’t even recognize the things we do are amazing. That’s why rewards are even more important. They keep us moving forward. Rewards break up the hard work. They inject fun. Rewards provide an opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments. They give us the opportunity to share what we’re doing with others – strengthening our communities and building awareness for ourselves and those exposed to us.
Rewarding yourself is an important part of life and specifically transitions. Here are a few things to keep in mind when rewarding yourself.
Choose a reward that celebrates and honors what you’ve just achieved.
Make your reward personal to you and your accomplishments.
Make the reward something easy to implement or enjoy quickly.
Rewards should be on the same level as the achievement.
Rewards don’t have to cost anything.

I've learned over the past week that sometimes, as a coach, I ask big scary questions like "What do you want?". Maybe a question that is more approachable is "What's Your Legacy?" This episode was inspired by last week's conversation with Steve Reimann as he called out that this very podcast will likely be around long after I'm gone. At first I thought this to be a bit morbid, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that he was right. The fact that I'm leaving a legacy became motivating and confirmation that I'm on the right path.
Here are few things that come to mind with I think "legacy":
Family – children, cousins, nephews, nieces, spouses and partners
Organizations
Volunteer work
Creations – artwork, music, poems, podcasts, blogs etc.
Reputation
Businesses
