Ich bin kein Freund des Wanderns. Doch jetzt gab es kein Zurück mehr. Am Morgen vor dem Start zu einer achttägigen Wanderung buckle ich mir erstmals meinen lächerlich schweren Rucksack auf. Und frage mich umgehend: Worauf habe ich mich eingelassen?Seit ich den Naukluft-Park vor vielen Jahren zum ersten Mal besucht habe, bin ich von diesen Bergen fasziniert. Das so unwirtlich anmutende Bergmassiv an der Schwelle zum großartigen Namib-Sandmeer ist dank zahlreicher natürlicher Quellen überraschend reich an Pflanzen, Vögeln und Wildtieren. Doch der flüchtige Besucher bekommt von der Naukluft nur sehr wenig zu sehen. Die einzige Zufahrtsstraße für Touristen führt direkt zum NWR Naukluft Camp. Das ist keineswegs ein Versuch, den Fahrzeugverkehr einzuschränken, vielmehr ist das extrem zerklüftete Terrain wirklich nicht fahrzeugfreundlich. Wie jeder bestätigen kann, der mal auf einer der Straßen (C19, C14 und D854) unterwegs war, die einen Rundweg um die Berge bilden, oder sie aus der Luft gesehen hat.

Eben noch Sonnenschein und eine leichte Brise. Tags darauf verbreitet Nebel eine unheimliche, mystische Stimmung. Am unberührten weißen Strand tost der stürmische Atlantik. Die weichen Hänge der gewellten Dünen stehen im krassen Kontrast zu den schroffen Felswänden, die einen Trockenfluss säumen. Wie Monolithen, die Wache halten. Ein wasserarmes Hinterland. Doch wohin man auch schaut, überall ist Leben. So viele Gegensätze in nur einem Atemzug! Genau das ist es, was diesen Ort am Rande der menschlichen Existenz prägt. Eine Dichotomie von rau und sanft. Von hell und geheimnisvoll. Aus Verlassenheit und pulsierendem Leben. Ein uraltes Land, das von sichtbaren Einflüssen des Menschen weitgehend unbehelligt ist – abgesehen von den Hunderten von Wracks, die entlang der Küste und in der Wüstenlandschaft verstreut sind. Die Überreste einer vergangenen Ära, als dieser turbulente Küstenstrich der Fluch der Seefahrer war und zur Endstation vieler glückloser Abenteurer wurde. Das ist Namibias Skelettküste.

Cradled by the Kwando and Linyanti rivers at the Zambezi Region’s southernmost point, lies Namibia’s largest conserved wetland area, the 28,500-ha-large Nkasa Rupara National Park.
