Episode 24 Camila Jimenez – Protecting Youth and Children from Sexual Exploitation   Today we are bringing you a special edition of This Amazing Story, on a very important issue that too often gets ignored or downplayed.   Every year in March, the Province of BC declares Stop the Sexual Exploitation of Children and Youth Awareness Week, to raise awareness, and recognize the importance of supporting communities to develop prevention, education, enforcement, and intervention strategies to address the sexual exploitation of children and youth.   Sadly, the Sexual Exploitation of Youth and Children is a growing issue – with incidents of online sexual exploitation in Canada having risen by 88% just since the beginning of the pandemic.   So today we are going to talk about Sexual Exploitation – specifically the sexual exploitation of children and youth – and this is definitely not an easy conversation to have. But my guest today does an amazing job of making the topic more accessible.   Camila Jimenez, is a national leader in the issue of child and youth sexual exploitation, having worked for more than 16 years on preventing children, youth and families from being affected by this crime and supporting them when it does.   She manages Children of the Street, which provides more than 25,000 children and youth each year with the information and tools they need to keep themselves and their peers safe from sexual exploitation.  Complimenting her work on the prevention of this issue, she has dedicated much of her career to running voluntary support services for youth in a variety of communities who are being sexually exploited.   Camila is a sought-after speaker, and has been called on to present at provincial, federal and international conferences, forums and events.  She is a mom of two small children herself, so she understands the concerns of parents, and uses her in-depth knowledge of the issue to teach them how to keep their kids safe, both online and in real life.   I learned a lot during this conversation, and I think you will too. Cameron Baumgartner is a student, a gymnast, a wrestler, a coach, and a top participant in Ninja competitions… From his first foray in the sport only 2 years ago, he has quickly risen to the peak level of competition, and has now taken part in two seasons of NBC’s American Ninja Warrior. For those who don’t know what that means, being an American Ninja Warrior has nothing to do with shooting blow darts in the dead of night, having kung fu fights on moonlit rooftops, or committing even mild espionage. These Ninjas are incredible athletes who combine the physical strength and explosive power of a hungry lion, with the speed, agility, and grace of a flying squirrel. Their goal is to overcome a set of insane obstacles in their path, and to do it faster than their opponents… Cameron makes these obstacles look too easy. Maybe it’s because from a young age, he was trained by fate to overcome obstacles set in his path. Maybe it’s the incredible support of his family that helped him get to where he is now, or maybe he was driven by some kind of inner force that propelled him over and above what even he thought he could achieve. I suspect that heaps of intense training and long hours at the gym have something to do with it too. Stephanie makes fashion fun and accessible – and her expertise in designing and hand-sewing beautiful clothing is matched by her knack for connecting with people. Everything you see in Devil May Wear is made locally, and Stephanie makes most of it herself! All of that, while making environmental sustainability a central part of her business plan. In addition to running a successful small business, Stephanie teaches at Simon Fraser University and at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, she works in the film industry, and she is a member of several boards and associations. How in the world does one person accomplish so much?!? France Benoit is a farmer from North West Territories, who started Yellowknife’s largest urban farm last year when she moved her off-the-grid farm operations from outside of town, to an industrial area of downtown Yellowknife. She converted an unused parking lot into 5000 sq ft of market garden, where she grows an impressively diverse range of crops for local consumption. She sells her produce and value added products like cheese, tiramisu, and coleslaw at the Yellowknife Farmers Market. In fact France played a major role in founding the Yellowknife Farmers market in 2013. Episode 18. Kryshan Randel and Ryan Alexander McDonald – Farewell, Treehouse Manor My guests today are Kryshan Randel and Ryan McDonald. Ryan and Kryshan are roommates at a home that has become legendary amongst a certain cohort of Vancouver creative minds and party-goers. It’s a secretive Mecha of the creative arts that has been shrouded in mystery and strange rumours that only get wilder with each retelling. Few people have heard the name of this home, and even fewer know the full extent of the finely-tuned chaos that has existed within it’s walls. But today, we will hear the amazing story of Treehouse Manor from two of it’s inhabitants, who are sadly in the process of a renoviction. Yes, Treehouse Manor will soon be torn down to rubble to make way for more boring townhouses where nothing this cool will ever happen again... Kryshan Randel lives and breathes film. He has been passionate about film-making since he was a baby. Kryshan is a film director and instructor, who has directed dozens of short films, with some of these touring the festival circuit worldwide. His short films have appeared at Sitges, Fantastic Fest, and Fantasia, and have screened on Amazon Instant Video, Movieola, and the Sundance Channel. Kryshan was at the helm for four episodes of the web series, Libelle, the Directors Guild of Canada’s Just Watch Us, campaign, and commercials for the smartphone app, Shotlister. Kryshan also does freelance shooting and editing for clients such as BBC America, Netflix, Legendary Pictures, Universal Studios, and Disney. Ryan McDonald is an actor, director, producer, writer, cinematographer, photographer, editor, projection designer, sometimes fight choreographer, occasional slow-motion animator, and life long party thrower. He is like a Swiss Army Knife of film and media skills, a MacGyver when it comes to problem solving, and his leadership has been likened to that of Jean Luc Picard. On today’s show I was super lucky to do a deep-dive into life at 6000 meters below sea level, with Deep-Sea Marine Biologist, Communications specialist, and Remotely Operated Vehicle navigator, Meagan Putts! Meagan is part of a team of researchers at the University of Hawaii, that is building a better understanding of life in the deep oceans, which are still largely unexplored and unknown. Meagan’s main area of expertise is in deep-sea coral and sponge commnunities, but she clearly has a love for all things oceanic. Joalda Morancy is a Geosphysics, Astronomy and Astrophysics student at the University of Chicago. She just started an internship with NASA, and her goal is to become an astronaut, and one day walk on Mars.   Joalda is Director of Operations at Students for the Development and Exploration of Space, or SEDS USA. When she started college and realized that SEDS didn’t have a chapter in Chicago, she started one - and she’s also the president of the Chicago chapter.   On top of all that, she is also a science communicator. Joalda has a passion for inspiring low-income and disadvantaged kids in Chicago to see that anything is possible; that they don’t need to believe in the limitations that other people have put on them.   In this episode, we talk about what inspired Joalda to pursue Astronomy. We look at the current and future state of Mars exploration, and what it will take to set up a permanent base on the red planet. And we also discuss some other awesome ideas for how humans might one day live in space. If you’re not familiar with this sort of thing, some of it might seem pretty out there.
