This episode was recorded by the Youth Voices Connect team, the Town Turnover parent programme. We thought if fitting to share this as the first Town Turnover podcast in support of mental health awareness week!
In this raw honest and open discussion, the Youth Voices Connect team discuss how mental health provision and delivery of services for young people could be improved to provide a more proactive approach and highlighted the need for dedicated engagement within schools, allowing young people to access services and/or support more easily.
☀️
The PAC-MAN analogy was used to describe feelings when someone is not able to express emotions. We then go onto discuss solutions and positive coping mechanisms which young people can employ to help them find a safe haven in times of need.
☀️
The team shared "Everyone has got internal battles they are fighting" and every young person should get the mental health support they need when they need it!
It's important to know that you are not alone, please always reach out and talk with someone you can trust, and please let your friends know that you are there for them.
The team shared the following self-care tips:-
1. Reach out, don't feel alone in this
2. Everyone is going through it right now, there are people you think have their life sorted but they're going through exactly the same as you
3. Talk to the man dem, a friend, family or someone you can trust
4. You're going to be ok
5. It's better out than in, don't let it eat at your brain
6. Find healthy coping mechanisms to distract yourself
7. Go for a run or walk, do some exercise
8. Vent if you need to
9. Make bars, express your emotions through lyrics
10. Find your healthy coping mechanism
Do you need urgent help?
If you are concerned that you are developing a mental health problem you should seek the advice and support of your GP as a matter of priority. If you are in distress and need immediate help and are unable to see a GP, you should visit your local A&E.
You're not alone; talk to someone you trust. Sharing a problem is often the first step to recovery.

Do you want to be a part of the first-of-its-kind youth leadership and social action project for Bedford?
2020 was the year that changed all of our lives forever, and there are now even fewer activities and opportunities available for the young people of Bedford.
The Town Turnover project aims to change the landscape and future for Bedford's young citizen's by creating a short film and documentary which will depict what life is like for young people having to navigate and find their way in today's new emerging world!.
Never before has there been a more important time for the community to come together and for young people to challenge the status quo; to make their voices heard in the knowledge that they're the new creators of the future!
Abraham Lincoln once said “Those who look for the bad in people will surely find it”, and he also said “The best way to predict your future is to create it”, it's all a matter of the perspective you choose.
We have chosen to look for the good in Bedford and believe that can only be found by reaching out to you, Bedford's young citizen's for your help in order to bring this project to life!
The Town Turnover team is bidding on @bid4better £15k funding to be able to create and deliver the project, and we need your help! The project will create and offer employment and volunteer opportunities for those who wish to be involved and a framework for young people who will gain audiovisual production skills and experience during the process of this project.
Find out more by registering to vote on bid day 17th April, where you can decide which project will win the funding.
