Episode 12: Dr. David L. Berry
LET’S TALK ABORTION AND EMPATHY WITH DR. DAVID L BERRY Our guest today is Dr David L Berry, founder and president of Austin Perinatal Associates. Dr Berry is fourth generation physician, father of four daughters, a true Texan, and an expert in medical and obstetric complications of pregnancy. He works with patients who have common preexisting conditions like diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorder, to folks with multiple pregnancy losses, and more complex diseases such as cancer, HIV/AIDS and many other issues. Beyond his practice, Dr. Berry provides expert witness testimony in abortion cases at the state level. His experience with high risk pregnancy, the depths of complications he’s dealt with, and his work in obstetrics makes him an ideal candidate for this work, as does his empathy for both the pregnant person and the fetus. We talk about some of the many pregnancy related complications he’s dealt with, circumstances around abortion, what kinds of abortions are performed at the different stages of pregnancy, empathy in the medical field, and how all of these inform his testimony and personal views- not just on abortion, but how we treat one another. Episode 6: Molly
Why is weight-inclusive care important? Molly Hennighausen first remembers engaging in disordered eating behavior at age 9. Molly discusses Health At Every Size, the racist and sexist history of BMI, their treatment experience, how doctor's treated them differently in a larger body, and how to curate their world to prevent intrusive thoughts from sneaking in.  While we do discuss eating disorders, specifically bulimia and anorexia, we do not go into detailed behaviors other than defining the diagnosis criteria. Also mentioned are GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), Barrett's Esophagus, and how to push for more weight-inclusive care at the doctor's office.
