Topic #1: Slave Rebellions (killmonger) *Talk about slaves rebelling on Ships* Stono Rebellion (1736) • Largest revolt ever in the 13 colonies • Hostages wanted to teach their human traffickers a lesson, many of the hostages were soldiers from Angola • This rebellion also led the human traffickers to believe that created American born hostages is better than using captured hostages directly from Africa. Gabriel’s Conspiracy (1800) • Hostage named Gabriel Prosser, a charismatic Blacksmith led a rebellion that planned to storm the capital of Richmond, raid the armory and hold Governor James Monroe hostage until they gained their freedom. • At the same time, a huge storm was rolling through VA and it scared many hostages, so they went and snitched on Prosser and his group. • 26 hostages were killed, one committed suicide and the 2 hostages that snitched was given their freedom. German Coast Uprising (1811) • Considered the largest and most sophisticated rebellion in US history (the Stono rebellion occurred before the US gained its independence) • Hostage named Charles Delondes and 25 other hostages attack their human traffickers, killing the son but letting the father trafficker go. • Confederate Officer and human trafficker Wade Hampton and 30 soldiers took 2 days to quell the rebellion. There was zero white deaths reported but by the end of the month approximately 100 hostages were killed. Turner’s Rebellion (1831) • Nat Turner and 70 armed hostages rebelled against their traffickers, they killed Turner’s trafficker, his wife and their kids with an ax • The following day, 15 death camps were attacked and between 50 and 60 traffickers were killed. • They were ultimately caught and the hostages were killed, Turner was hung and his body was desecrated. (Amistad) Harriet Jacobs Amistad (hostages from Africa, deemed illegally captured by the Supreme Court and was allowed to be sent back to Arica) (Tami recording) Topic #2: Resistance Different ways of resisting • Dangerous in the south to openly resist, could equal death • Subtle ways to combat racism, refusing to answer to derogatory names and staging sit ins • Fighting back could also mean using guns and fists, much like today Topic #3: Black Women Have always fought back • Black agricultural workers in Arkansas refused to pick cotton for 75 cents • Black women battled US marines who tried to force them to clean Miami’s streets for no wage following a hurricane • Women domestic workers in places like Alabama and South Carolina demanded wage renegotiations under the Works Progress Administration wage • Also in South Carolina, over 200 Black women led a strike in a factory where they demanded a uniform wage under the Work Progress Administration guidelines, without regards to their skill.
