The WHRO Writer's Block brings together local artists who share a common bond—expressing themselves through writing. Performers include local poets and slam poets, spoken word artists, storytellers, and authors with interludes of music by some of the region’s top musicians. Topics vary from the environment and war to love and race relations. Works range from somber and thought-provoking to lighthearted and comical.

The Writer's Block Smartmouth Brewing Company
This encore presentation of The Writer’s Block was recorded in July 2018 at the Smarthmouth Brewery in Virginia Beach, and features singer-songwriter Tret Fure. Join Tret as she begins the program with a wonderful sing-a-long of “Raise Your Voice So High” a perfect anthem a day before we celebrate the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King. Literary artists include Chris Chandler reciting” Radio Alarm” and Walter Bowles presenting “Letter to my Grandchildren.”

Veterans Edition
The Writer’s Block, the WHRV initiative that features local singers, songwriters, poets and storytellers returns this Sunday morning with the Veterans Edition recorded November 9, 2018 at Stupft in Hampton. It presented veterans and family members sharing their stories about the sacrifices made in military life. The featured musical guest was U.S. Coastguard active duty member Brian Badami. Also hear Jeffrey Walker with “The History of Soldiering,” Nathan Payne with “Brotherhood,” and Thelma Jarvis Peterson with “Message in a Fruitcake.”

Rotary Edition
In September, WHRO and WHRV Public Media teamed with local Rotarians during their conference held in Virginia Beach. This edition of the Writer’s Block features members of Rotary International joining with other local artists along with featured musical artist Narissa Bond for an evening of original literary work. It was a natural partnership for two organizations who share a passion for being a conduit for positive change in our region. The Writer’s Block Featured Artist in Residence: multiverse book Norfolk native Doug Pilley is a graduate of William and Mary and holds an MFA from Old Dominion University. He was awarded a CityArts Grant from the NEA and the City of Norfolk to perform poetry around town. He is published in the Anthology of Poems by the Poetry Society of Virginia, and Portland Magazine and has released his first book of short stories entitled Tales from the Multiverse. This edition of Writer’s Block features Doug reading “The Djinn.”

Sonatas and Stories
Last spring, WHRO-FM and WHRV joined forces to bring together the best of Classical Open Mic and Writer’s Block in “Sonatas and Stories,” a live performance featuring local writers and classical musicians, with hosts Wayla Chambo and Gina Gambony. This month we are delighted to share Sonatas and Stories on air! The performers include members of the Virginia Symphony and the USAF Heritage of America Band, as well as Virginia Wesleyan University faculty and students. You’ll hear music by Piazzolla, Glazunov, Handel, and more, and works by local authors Vivian Teter, Jayla Cross, Laura Bortnick and Larry Edge. Recorded live at the Susan S. Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center at Virginia Wesleyan.
