Welcome back! This is Episode 5 of The Whiskey Tapes!
Today we’re talking to Brian Rathbun. This was our first podcast recorded outside of the basement on location, in Brian’s woodshop.
My first exposure to Brian was his outspoken nature at several town meetings and I didn't want to pass up the opportunity for a dram and some conversation with this long time local and retired patternmaker.
Brian and I sample the Distiller’s Select Woodford reserve Kentucky Straight Rye whiskey. This is my first time drinking rye, and even at 45.2% alcohol volume it was one of the smoother whiskeys we've sampled to date. Stay up to date on future episodes on https://www.thewhiskeytapes.com. Welcome to Dan Meyer’s interview, part two!
We left off the first part talking about the sweetest Dad-in-law emails ever, and this next hour with Dan, we finish off a 375ml bottle of Knob Creek. We chat about life in our small town, our wive’s influence on clean living, ALIENS and: (DISCLAIMER: you have been warned!) A LOT OF POLITICS: Trump, the 2016 election, shutdowns, walls, time-traveling westerns, impeachment, and hunter and gatherers. There’s so much more!
Thanks for listening, and check out the www.whiskeytapes.com.
Okay, here we go, Dan: part two, The Whiskey Tapes.

On this episode of The Whiskey Tapes, we sit down with Dan Meyer and a bottle of Knob Creek. Following a career playing in the major leagues with the Marlins, the Braves and Oakland, Dan is now a pitching coach for the Atlanta Braves. In the off season, Dan comes back to his wife’s home town of North Stonington, spending time raising their two kiddos.
Our usual one hour discussion ran about 4 hours on tape, where we discussed baseball, parenting, kids and technology, politics and he asked me some questions about our Airstream travels. I have cut down the discussion into 2 one hour episodes.
Our dram this winter evening is Knob Creek’s “unflinching balance of deep, old-style flavor with a natural oak sweetness.” It is 100 proof, full flavor, honest Pre-Prohibition style bourbon whiskey.

On this episode of The Whiskey Tapes we chat with Bostonite turned NoStoer, Justin Gigliello. There was no shortage of topics to uncover with Justin where we discussed hockey, Italian heritage, opera singing, volunteer firefighting, our diverse political affiliations and maybe even a bit of Disney magic.
While conversing we enjoyed the sweet taste of Jameson Irish Whiskey.
“The core Jameson’s Whiskey spirit comes from a single distillery in Cork, Ireland, but uses a unique mixture of grain, single malt, and single-pot-still spirits aged seven years. All of the grains are sourced from local fields within a 50-mile radius of the plant, making Jameson’s more than just Irish in style and method — it carries the flavor of the land where it was born.”
Pour yourself a splash to ward off the winter chill as you enjoy this episode of The Whiskey Tapes.

Thank you so much everyone who has listened to Episode 1 of the Whiskey Tapes. Thank you so much for all of the feedback. I appreciated your feedback on the squeeky chair (that was taken care of) as well is your desire to hear more about the Whiskey itself. This will come with time. I am still new to the world of whiskey and podcasting. I am working out that sweet spot between interviewing my guests and the whiskey tasting. Please continue to submit your feedback.
Today we meed Randy. We live together in the same town in Connecticut where our kids are the same age and go to school together. We have formed an unofficial group of non-NoStoers who have either married into or simply moved to town. Randy and I will sample a dram of Makers Mark while he regales me with his insight into the current state of healthcare, his personal systems of organization, how being a parent changes you and, my personal interest, his DIY logging opperations.
