Do you know what foods spike your blood sugar? In this episode we've asked renowned journalist Kate Spicer to strap on a blood glucose monitor and find out. Kate is always up for a health challenge and with a critical eye on these things, we thought she would be perfect to test this gadget out.
CGM (Continuous glucose monitoring) has typically been associated with diabetic patients as a way to measure blood glucose levels and has been pretty game changing. More recently these monitors have been used by non-diabetic people to understand how they might respond to different foods. With more of a move towards personalised nutrition and as a potential preventative measure, you can see how these gadgets might have some real benefits.
The rules: Kate has to wear the monitor for 2 weeks using the Veri app to input all of her meals. This should follow Kate’s typical eating habits without any restrictions or changes so we can see how her blood glucose levels change according to what she has eaten.
Can this help Kate to understand more about the foods that do or don’t work for her? Or do these monitors potentially trigger negative eating patterns around food?
