Waking up today in a nation still raw from the culmination of dangerous apathy for white supremacy. Yesterday was the product of the GOP using Trump’s powerbase to gain and keep their own power. Yesterday was a product of allowing white supremacy to go unchecked. Yesterday was the result of round table discussions when we should have brought real policy change, it is the product of half steps and empty gestures. All done in the name of a false equivalency. All done because people insisted that racist and anti-racist, fascist, and anti-fascist have an equal voice to be heard. The sad fact of the matter is that Trump and the GOP have for decades been manipulating a group of people disenfranchised by their very policies! Praying upon people who need someone to blame and giving them helpful scapegoats that fit the white supremacist narrative and are easy for them to accept as fact. Many people are saying, this isn’t America. As much as I’d like to comfort myself with that lie it’s just irresponsible to do so. These people were our own people. It’s really easy to other them after such an act. But, while we may not be like them, we are all Americans. If we are to move towards a future where the difference of our opinion is not weaponized, we have to acknowledge the depts to which these insurrectionists are a part of our American society. A society that needs to rid itself of structural oppression that has fueled our nation's prominent place in the world. We need to, with unquestionable certainty rid ourselves of white supremacy. It is the job of every one of our institutions, and every one of us individually.
