In this episode, I reconsider a stance I once held about the role of public debate in engaging those outside the Christian faith. Looking at Paul’s reasoning in Athens alongside Scripture’s warnings against quarrels, contention, and unnecessary provocation, I wrestle with the difference between defending the faith and simply fighting to win an argument.
Scripture clearly gives believers room to reason, correct, contend for the faith, and boldly proclaim truth, but what should our posture be while doing it? And if our ultimate goal is to point people toward Christ, should we be just as concerned with how we present the truth as we are with proving that what we believe is true?
Winning Souls or Arguments: When Defending the Faith Becomes Fighting is an honest examination of what it means to stand firmly for truth while still approaching others with the gentleness, wisdom, and love Scripture requires.
