Ep. 201: The Bone Wars (Tell We Tale!)
Remember when everyone in America was digging up giant human skeletons (see episode 199)? Well it turns out, some people were digging up and identifying actual dinosaur bones as well; two of those people were Cope and Marsh. This week, Katy takes the reins and tells Hannah about the Bone Wars! The girls talk not so friendly rivalries, future TV series casting, dinosaurs (duh), explosions, and plenty of “bone” jokes. If you love science, chaos, and pettiness, you’re gonna love this episode! So pour your drinks, grab a snack, and join us for this Tell We Tale!Support the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!

Ep. 200: The Lost Cosmonaut Revisited
It's our 200th episode!!! And we are throwing it back to where it all began, but with better audio, and more thorough research. This week, Hannah re-tells Katy the story of the Lost Cosmonaut, and all the deep, dark, terrible things that happened within the Soviet (and US) Space Program. The girls talk about the ethics of putting dogs in space (spoiler: it's not ethical and should never be done), horrific ways to die (ie, burned alive), not so bad ways to die (ie, exposed to the vacuum of space), and the likelihood of two Italian brothers uncovering the darkest, and most deeply kept secret in Soviet Russia. The first time we covered this topic, we were little baby podcasters stumbling through our 7th episode with what turned out to be faulty audio; this time around, we're "seasoned" podcasters making our 200th episode, still trying to figure out the whole audio thing, and trying to keep the food noises to a minimum. Basically, we're professionals. Pour your drinks, get a celebratory snack (we chose chocolate/peanut butter cookies, and peanuts), and join us for this astronomical Conspiracy Theory! Ep. 199: Giant Skeletons
In the mid 1800’s, giant human bones seemed to be turning up all across America, at the same time that many scholars and preachers were teaching that the Americas had once been inhabited by a race of prehistoric white giants. This week, Hannah tells Katy about this “fun” time in American history, and some of the skeletons that were unearthed. The mushy teenage girl brains do not go away (they’re talking about abnormally large bones… come on), but they do talk a little science, history, and just the right amount of tangents. So pour the drinks, dust off your paleontology books, and join us for this weird-ass tale!Sources: https://www.cnn.com/2024/01/26/us/alabama-execution-nitrogen-what-we-know/index.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archaeology_and_racism#Mound_Buildershttps://www.dispatch.com/story/news/local/2020/04/26/archaeology-saga-giant-mound-builders/1286127007/https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/columns/2020/12/27/column-newspapers-have-been-debunking-giant-hoaxes-long-time/3989156001/https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/22954-gigantismhttps://web.archive.org/web/20091217020128/http://www.archaeology.org/0511/etc/giants.htmlhttps://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/cardiff-giant-was-just-big-hoax-180965274/https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=L0EoAAAAIBAJ&sjid=VwUGAAAAIBAJ&dq=there-can-be-no-question-about-the-genuineness-of-this-piece-of-statuary&pg=6491%2C6900187https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid_Muldoonhttps://www.nps.gov/subjects/nagpra/compliance.htmhttps://allthatsinteresting.com/kandahar-giant@giants_of_ancientamerica on InstagramSupport the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!

Ep. 198: Alcatraz, pt. 6: Sam Shockley
It’s the episode Hannah’s been waiting for! This week, Hannah finally tells Katy the tragic story of inmate, Sam Shockley, and how he was failed by the system at every stage of his life. From the time he was a teenager, until he was caught up in the Battle of Alcatraz as an adult and unfairly executed by the state, Sam is the prime example of why mental health advocacy matters, why prison reform matters, and why we won’t stop talking about either one. Pour the stiff drinks if you’ve got ‘em, and brace yourself for a story we hope stays with you. Ep. 197: Alcatraz, pt. 5: James Boarman and Marvin Hubbard
We’re almost through our mugshot profiles, and in Alcatraz, pt. 5 (no one’s sick of this, right?) Hannah tells Katy about smirking James Boarman, and Dermot Mulroney/Marvin Hubbard. The girls talk mushy teenage boy brains, mushy teenage girl brains, botched escape attempts, and so much more. It’s an unintentionally chaotic episode, but worth it!So pour the drinks, bear with us, and join us for our second to the last Alcatraz episode! Sources:https://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/1940?amount=12812https://archive.org/details/alcatrazdefiniti0000essl/page/304/mode/2up?view=theaterhttps://alanehunter.com/tag/james-a-boarman/https://www.gadsdentimes.com/story/news/local/2017/12/30/from-etowah-county-to-alcatraz-hubbard-was-involved-in-1946-uprising-at-infamous-prison/16693279007/https://www.gadsdentimes.com/story/news/local/2018/01/01/hubbard-falls-victim-to-temptation/16703500007/https://www.gadsdentimes.com/story/news/local/2018/01/01/etowah-county-native-dies-in-failed-alcatraz-escape-attempt/16700777007/Support the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!

Ep. 196: Alcatraz, pt. 4: Ted Cole and Ralph Roe
Surprise, it’s another Alcatraz episode! This time, in preparation for the one inmate profile Hannah really wants to do (Sam Shockley), she decided to preface by giving Katy the rundown on the four mugshots we have hanging in the studio, starting with the infamous Ted Cole and Ralph Roe. The girls talk about what led to the first ever successful escape from the rock, what makes a good FBI description, Chris Angeling your way out of handcuffs, and why you should never pick up handsome hitchhikers. It’s long and it’s probably unnecessary, but we’re leaning into the hyper-fixation, and we hope you don’t mind. So pour the drinks, and join us for what is technically an Unsolved Mystery! Sources: https://tulsaworld.com/did-ted-cole-escape-alcatraz-alive/article_16841f6a-e8b3-5c4a-b0e2-38324a591f4a.htmlhttps://blog.genealogybank.com/did-two-cons-escape-from-escape-proof-alcatraz.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_the_Firstborn_(Morrisite)#Teachingshttps://www.cityexperiences.com/blog/the-december-departures-from-alcatraz/https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/74841432/ralph-roehttps://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/1934?amount=3206.46https://www.joplinglobe.com/news/local_news/public-enemy-no-1/article_932c6bbd-c3ad-5575-b1c8-92b0e0b5d055.htmlSupport the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!

Ep. 195: Near Death Experiences
If you suddenly find yourself in a dark tunnel experiencing an overwhelming feeling of love and peace, and being drawn towards a bright light, you might be dead. Or you might be one of the 9 million Americans who have had a Near Death Experience (and you're about to be brought back to life by medical science.) This week, Hannah tells Katy about the crazy phenomenon that is Near Death Experiences: something experienced by people of all ages, cultures, orientations, etc. with a remarkable degree of consistency. It gets a little science-y, but the girls talk falling off mountains, anesthesia awareness, videos that make them cry (aka: children hearing for the first time and dogs being reunited with their owners), and so much more. This is truly a topic you can get lost in, so buckle up!Pour the drinks, get a snack, and settle in for this tale of life after death! Link to the HKL Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/@a.wareclothingSources: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6173534/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near-death_experiencehttps://www.esquire.com/entertainment/interviews/a23248/the-prophet/https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1550830716300283#preview-section-referenceshttps://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.2190/96XL-RQE6-DDXR-DUD5https://www.alieward.com/ologies/quasithanatologyhttps://med.virginia.edu/perceptual-studies/wp-content/uploads/sites/360/2017/01/STE46_Do-Near-Death-Experiences-ProvideEvidence-for-Survival-of-Human-Personality.pdfhttps://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=104397005https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc461701/m1/4/https://med.virginia.edu/perceptual-studies/wp-content/uploads/sites/360/2017/01/NDE21_distressingfNDE-Psych.pdfSupport the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!

Ep. 194: C is for Chupacabra (Tell We Tale!)
Is it a strange breed of hairless, underground coyote? A reptilian alien with fur? The Jersey Devil far from home? Or is it the infamous chupacabra? This week, the girls are back from their holiday break, and Katy tells Hannah about the southern goat-sucker that’s been terrorizing livestock for (surprisingly) not that long. They talk about the various sightings, as well as its various forms, what could really be bleeding goats and cows dry (spoiler alert: science), and why you should not refrigerate bones. We hope everyone had a safe happy New Year, and are recovering from their holiday festivities. Ep. 193: John Titor
If you thought we were done with time travel, you were dead wrong! This week, Hannah tells Katy about John Titor, the alleged time traveler from 2036 who chatted with various people online in 2000 and 2001, and told us some *fascinating* things about the future. The girls talk black holes, computer programing disasters, whether Katy's child is actually a time traveler, pangolins, and more. If you want to know what the world might be like (in another timeline) in 12-ish years, or if you want to hear about a bunch of wars we avoided (yay!), or if you just want some good time travel content to discuss with loved ones over the holidays, this is the episode for you. So pour the eggnog, light the Yule log, and join us for this week's episode! Sources: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/16/magazine/time-slips-time-travel.htmlhttps://www.historicmysteries.com/kersey-time-slip/https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/when-three-british-boys-traveled-to-medieval-england-or-did-they-35698485/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_travel_claims_and_urban_legendshttps://allthatsinteresting.com/chronovisorhttps://listverse.com/2021/01/26/ten-amazing-slips-in-time/https://sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/timesliphttps://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/depersonalization-derealization-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20352911https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_de_Montesquiouhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moberly%E2%80%93Jourdain_incidenthttps://www.historicmysteries.com/vatican-chronovisor/https://www.theguardian.com/science/2005/jun/09/farouthttps://steemit.com/marlin/@alihasymi/marlin-pohlman-a-criminal-legend-who-attracted-the-attention-of-the-worldhttps://www.oregonlive.com/portland/2013/10/post_373.htmlhttps://www.cdc.gov/prions/vcjd/about.htmlSupport the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!

Ep. 192: Time Slips
Have you ever been walking through the English countryside (or the gardens of Versailles) and suddenly felt the world slow down, like time has somehow stopped or...shifted? You may have experienced a time slip! This week, Hannah tells Katy all about this phenomenon of accidentally finding yourself in another time with two classic examples. The girls talk thatched roofs, sombrero'd men, lesbian-psychic-diseases, and taking pictures of Jesus. This one was SO much fun, and it shows. So pour the drinks, get the flux capacitor warmed up, and join us for this time-tested tale of time travel! Sources:https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/16/magazine/time-slips-time-travel.htmhttps://www.historicmysteries.com/kersey-time-slip/https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/when-three-british-boys-traveled-to-medieval-england-or-did-they-35698485/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_travel_claims_and_urban_legendshttps://allthatsinteresting.com/chronovisorhttps://listverse.com/2021/01/26/ten-amazing-slips-in-time/https://sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/timesliphttps://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/depersonalization-derealization-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20352911https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_de_Montesquiouhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moberly%E2%80%93Jourdain_incidenthttps://www.historicmysteries.com/vatican-chronovisor/https://www.theguardian.com/science/2005/jun/09/faroutSupport the showFollow us @thetaleswetellpodcast on Facebook and Instagram, or thetaleswetellpodcast.comSupport us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/join/thetaleswetellpodcast?Click here for merch!
