Welcome to the Summer Mumma Podcast I'm your host Janis Carver, in this episode 2, I share more on this question from mothers and carers about being uncertain or worried when to start your little one in swim lessons.
This is a common question that mums and carers ask.
Common concerns are, the cost, we don't have a pool, they won't be able to swim straight away and we never go on holidays. Or different views of other family members may make you second guess your decision.
Austswim who are Australia's national organisation for Teaching of Swimming and Water Safety (Educators in aquatics)
Extensive research carried out by medical and industry consultation does not recommend formal swimming or water safety programs for infants under 6 months of age.
From birth to 6 months of age parents can continue water exposure in the bath at home. Parents can seek advice from swim schools to introduce infants to aquatic experiences at home to prepare them for formal learning from 6 months
If introducing infants who are less than 6 months of age to public pools extra care must be taken to ensure the health needs fro infants are catered for. (water hygiene, water and air temperature and baby handling techniques.
Infant and Preschool Aquatics and water safety programs are designed to introduce you and your child to water.
So any programs aquatic programs for infants under the age of 24 months where the child is getting to know and experience life in the water are known as water familiarisation
If your child is older and has yet to attend formal water safety programs or water programs contact your local swim school or contact
Remember water safety, always be within arms reach, supervision at all times regardless of a child's swim ability, and recognise and eliminate water dangers. Water is everywhere, so learn safety knowledge and survival skills.
