
Shelly Houser is a unique guest who started in simulation much differently from my other guests. As a congenital hemipelvectomy amputee, Shelly started out as an SP for St. Luke's hospital, Jefferson University, and Villanova University. She has a bachelor's in Media Studies and a Master's in Human Services. Having worked on television shows such as It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Sprout TV, Shelly is no stranger to script supervising and writing. After 10 years of professional and a lifetime of personal experience, Shelly has launched her consulting company, Inclusive Consulting, LLC, where she collaborates and consults with teaching institutions and businesses seeking to improve their knowledge, protocols, and best practices. Shelly also has produced, hosted, and edited Life Beyond the Label podcast. She previously carried out the same function on DisAbilty Talks for two years. In this episode Phillip shares his unique journey into simulation and the impact he has had in many parts of the country. Phillip Wortham is currently the Director of Operations and Technology (COO) at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) one of the world’s largest simulation centers located in Tampa Florida. CAMLS is a 90,000 sqft free standing center with over 40 employees. Prior to joining CAMLS, Phillip spent over six years leading Intermountain Healthcare’s Simulation Consortium comprising of 24 hospitals and 6 simulation centers as the Simulation Business Director of Operations and Technology in Salt Lake City Utah. As a member of the Simulation Executive Council, he partnered with cross-functional team leads for overall strategic vision, and priorities for system-wide learning. He provided direction of design, implementation, and evaluation of all simulation activities, training material, technology, and course outcomes. In addition to his role at Intermountain Healthcare, Phillip served as the Technology Chair for the Utah Simulation Coalition, working to bridge the gap between academic institutions and healthcare facilities using technology and innovation. Prior to his extensive work at Intermountain Healthcare, Phillip held positions as Simulation Operations Specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado where he was integral in the development of a new simulation program on the University of Colorado campus. His journey in healthcare started at Denver Health Medical Center as the Chief Video Production Engineer where he oversaw emerging technologies such as Telehealth and video conferencing. As Colorado’s primary safety-net institution, Denver Health provides billions of dollars in uncompensated care and serves as a model for other safety net institutions across the nation. Phillip is currently an accreditation Site Reviewer for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. The Chair of the Super-Sized Simulation Affinity Group (SSH), Mentor for Simulation Operations Specialists (SimGHOSTS). Recently honored by the Tampa Bay Business Journal as one of 40 professionals under the age of 40 in Tampa Bay driving innovation in our community and a recent award winner of a Videographer Award for his work in the world of film production and marketing. Suzan (Suzie) Kardong-Edgren PhD, RN, ANEF, CHSE, FSSH, FAAN is an internationally known speaker, consultant, and educational researcher with over 150 publications. Dr. Edgren was a consultant on the landmark National Council of State Boards of Nursing National Simulation Study that determined that up to 50% of traditional clinical could be replaced with high quality simulation. Dr. Edgren served as the Editor-in-Chief of Clinical Simulation in Nursing for 10 years; and is currently the Editor-in-Chief of 2 new interactive online review guides for those seeking certification in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. She has been awarded both the National League for Nursing Deborah Spunt Lectureship and the Michael Gordon Lectureship in Simulation from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Dr. Edgren served as chair of the Research Committee for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and the Vice President of Research for the INACSL. She is a Fellow in the Society of Simulation in Healthcare, the Academy of Nursing Education Fellows, and the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. Edgren is the 2021-2022 President of the International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation in Nursing (INACSL) and an Associate Professor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston.

Join us for an interview with the incoming president of INACSL, Dr. Laura Gonzalez. Laura shares her research as well as insights to the future of simulaion as well as VR and Telehealth. Laura is a wealth of information and her passion shines in the discussion. Dr. Gonzalez is the VP of Clinical Learning Resources at Sentinel U®. She is an internationally recognized simulation expert. She is one of 84 advanced certified healthcare simulation educators (CHSE-A) globally. In the fall of 2020, she was recognized by the prestigious American Academy of Nurses as a Fellow (FAAN). She is also a fellow of the Academy of Nurse Educators (ANEF). Her nursing career focuses on advancing the science of nursing education through the use of simulation and its impact on learner outcomes. Dr.Gonzalez has a very specific body of work that has resulted in over 20 data-based manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, and one clinical skills textbook. She was Co-PI on a large interprofessional grant through the National Science Foundation (NSF). She is one of several scientists to have two patents: on Detecting Sterile Field Events and Related Methods and Virtual Patients. She is a seasoned nurse educator with experience teaching across the curriculum to include live, hybrid, online, and synchronous delivery methods.
