The Sci-Fi Film School #37 – Barbarella
On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School we review the 1968 Sexploitation film Barbarella. After an in-flight anti-gravity striptease (masked by the film's opening titles), Barbarella, a 41st century astronaut, lands on the planet Lythion and sets out to find the evil Durand Durand in the city of Sogo, where a new sin is invented every hour. There, she encounters such objects as the Excessive Machine, a genuine sex organ on which an accomplished artist of the keyboard, in this case, Durand Durand himself, can drive a victim to death by pleasure, a lesbian queen who, in her dream chamber, can make her fantasies take form, and a group of ladies smoking a giant hookah which, via a poor victim struggling in its glass globe, dispenses Essence of Man. Based on the popular French comic strip. Starring Jane Fonda, John Phillip Law, Anita Pallenberg, Milo O'Shea & Marcel Marceau. The Sci-Fi Film School #36 – Equilibrium
On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School we review the 2002 dystopian action adventure thriller Equilibrium. In a futuristic world, a strict regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death. Cleric John Preston is a top ranking government agent responsible for destroying those who resist the rules. When he misses a dose of Prozium, a mind-altering drug that hinders emotion, Preston, who has been trained to enforce the strict laws of the new regime, suddenly becomes the only person capable of overthrowing it. The Sci-Fi Film School #35 – The American Astronaut
On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School we review the 2001 space-western/musical The American Astronaut. Space travel has become a dirty way of life dominated by derelicts, grease monkeys, thieves, and hard-boiled interplanetary traders such as Samuel Curtis, an astronaut from Earth who deals in a rare goods, living or otherwise. His mission begins with the unlikely delivery of a cat to a small outer-belt asteroid saloon where he meets his former dance partner, and renowned interplanetary fruit thief, the Blueberry Pirate. As payment for his delivery of the cat, Curtis receives a homemade cloning device already in the process of creating a creature most rare in this space quadrant... a Real Live Girl. At the suggestion of the Blueberry Pirate, Curtis takes the Real Live Girl to Jupiter where women have long been a mystery. There, he proposes a trade with the owner of Jupiter: the Real Live Girl clone for the Boy Who Actually Saw A Woman's Breast. The Boy Who Actually Saw A Woman's Breast is regarded as royalty on the all-male mining planet of Jupiter because of his unique and exotic experience. Cory McAbee wrote and starred in it as Samuel Curtis, along with Rocco Sisto as Professor Hess, Gregory Russell Cook at The Boy Who Actually Saw a Woman’s Breast, Annie Golden as Cloris and Joshua Taylor as Blueberry Pirate.   The movie was made for between 1 and 2 Million dollars. The band Billy Nayer Show, helmed by McAbee, wrote and performed the film's soundtrack. The Sci-Fi Film School #31 – Iron Sky
On this return episode of The Sci-Fi Film School we review the 2012 movie Iron Sky. A 2012 Finnish-German-Australian produced film that tells the story of Nazi Germans who, after being defeated in 1945, fled to the Moon where they built a space fleet to return years later to conquer Earth. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1034314/?ref_=sr_1 Iron Sky was theatrically released throughout Europe in April 2012. It was shown on select screens in the U.S. as well. Rated R for language and some violence it runs 93 minutes. It was filmed on location in the U.S., Australia, Germany and Finland. The Sci-Fi Film School #29 – Plan 9 From Outer Space
On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School, we talk about the 1959 b-movie classic Plan 9 From Outer Space. Written and directed by Edward D. Wood Jr. and starring Gregory Walcott, Mona McKinnon, Tor Johnson and Maila "Vampira" Nurmi. The film bills Bela Lugosi posthumously as a star, although silent footage of the actor had been shot by Wood for other, unfinished projects just before Lugosi's death in 1956. In California, an old man (Lugosi) grieves the loss of his wife (Vampira) and on the next day he also dies. However, the space soldier Eros and her mate Tanna use an electric device to resurrect them both and the strong Inspector Clay (Tor Johnson) that was murdered by the couple. Their intention is not to conquest Earth but to stop mankind from developing the powerful bomb "Solobonite" that would threaten the universe. When the population of Hollywood and Washington DC sees flying saucers on the sky, a colonel, a police lieutenant, a commercial pilot, his wife and a policeman try to stop the aliens. Released on July 22nd, 1959, Plan 9 From Outer Space ran 79 minutes and was made on a budget of $60,000. It has an IMDB rating of Ratings: 3.8 out of 10. The Sci-Fi Film School #28 – Repo! The Genetic Opera
On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School, we talk about the 2008 horror-rock opera musical film Repo! The Genetic Opera Starring Alexa Vega as Shilo Wallace, Paul Sorvino as Rottissimo "Rotti" Largo, Anthony Head as Nathan Wallace, Sarah Brightman as Magdalene "Blind Mag" Defoe, Paris Hilton as Carmela/Amber, Bill Moseley as Luigi Largo, Terrance Zdunich as Graverobber and Joan Jett (cameo) as Guitarist. In the near future, a biotech company saves mankind with synthetic replacements for failed organs. But those who default on their new liver or heart are subject to repossession. Shilo (Alexa Vega) navigates this dystopia while searching for a cure for her rare illness. Her odyssey is set to a number of catchy songs in this tongue-in-cheek opera. The Sci-Fi Film School #27 – The Dark Side of the Moon
On this episode of The Sci-Fi Film School, we talk about the 1990 direct to video movie The Dark Side of the Moon. Starring Robert Sampsonas Flynn Harding, Will Bledsoe as Giles Stewart, Joe Turkel as Paxton Warner, Camilla More as Lesli, John Diehl as Philip Jennings, Wendy MacDonald as Alex McInny and Alan Blumenfeld as Dreyfus Steiner. In 2022, a spaceship is stranded on the dark side of the moon, where the crew finds a 30-year-old shuttle that seems to be lifeless. Upon boarding to look for supplies, they find a corpse and an unrelenting evil that threatens to kill them all. One by one, the crewmembers are possessed and turn on one another in a killing rampage, until finally, the survivors deduce that the spirit haunting them is actually Satan, who is rapidly gaining strength. Rated R, The Dark Side of the Moon has a run time of 85 minutes. IMDB gives it a rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 860 users. Rotten Tomatoes give it 35%.
