Episode 27 – Chris Yena – This Gaffer know’s a thing or two about what drives success – both in professional sports and professional services firms!
"Sometimes those who lead their businesses get scared and won't make the decisions they need to"... if this sounds like a voice you might be hearing in your own head from time to time, then this Robo's episode with the always charismatic Chris Yena - the very experienced and successful GM of a mid-sized Financial Planning firm - is absolutely for you. This was the answer that Chris gave to a question around why Financial Planning practices don't make the leap of faith that they need, and ultimately know, will be best for themselves and their businesses. You'll get to learn that Chris has always taken a very logical and structured approach to all of his important decisions along his Financial Planning journey, from product land to licensee and most recently practice owner and GM of a growing and changing firm. Chris has many loves but few allow him to really engage his passion for culture and strategy like running his Financial Planning firm - Warringal Financial Services - and when he is coaching his teams in the round ball game (or Football - the only real Football he will say as well). That's because both provide amazing rewards when you get the balance right between Strategy, Culture, Talent, Patience and hard bloody work. It is this quest for finding the balance, and then trying to keep it in an ever changing environment, that has made Chris one of the few people that has taken on the role of GM in a firm, and where most have failed, he has not survived but thrived! Chris aka "Geeza"... is just a ripping bloke... despite his successes he is humble and down to earth, maybe that is part of his heritage, and maybe it's because he also follows the mighty Tottenham Hotspur's - the people's club... In this Poddie you'll get to hear how Chris and I met about 15 years ago when we were both on the "product" side of the fence, and how I looked to him as someone who I thought could see "the writing on the wall" before everyone else. It's an ability to read the play before it happens, that has allowed him to always time his runs well, giving himself and those around him the best chance of kicking goals... and ultimately winning whatever game they are playing! Episode 26 – Anne Graham – on knowing when and how to take ‘conservative’ risks to help you grow your Financial Planning firm
Anne is dead set one of the most genuine people you will every meet, and someone that I am privileged to call not only my friend, but also a true mentor for my business. She has over 20 years of Financial Planning experience and has a list of recognition's as long as your arm and when you hear her "story" you'll understand why. Inwardly the way Anne has approached all of her decisions is with a "conservative at heart" nature, which has led to her patient but inevitably successful development of herself as a Financial Planner, her marriage with David, her business and now her place as an role model to younger females in the industry (even if she doesn't admit that is exactly what she is). Outwardly she is confident in her sense of self, her moral compass and her right to challenge the way things are done. Whether that is in her role as the female CEO and leader of a successful Financial Planning practice in what is still a male dominated industry, or in the way she confidently challenges the status quo and her views on the future of Financial Planning in Australia and who should ultimately decide how we as Planners provide advice to our clients... And she can swear like a sailor on shore leave which is another reason I love her to bits!!! All the class and professionalism of a Big 4 corporate CEO, yet still finds a way to be down to earth and have a laugh, and drink and the odd blue phrase to lighten the mood! Anyone that has met Anne in person will know exactly what you're going to get from this episode... A bit of a history lesson, mixed with her journey in and out of business partnerships and back into a new "Story" in her new business with her new business partners (Sarah & Kara). The best thing about Anne is that she still "hasn't decided what she wants to be when she grows up".... but you know that whatever that is, she'll give it a "bloody good crack!" Episode 25 – David Rae – an inspiration for everyone in the LGBT community that wants to take their financial conversations to centre stage
David Rae CFP (the original and still the best - soon to be trademarked) brings the energy and the theatre into everything he does.  In a Financial Services world that can be accused (and rightly so) of being a "Boys Club", that is too much same/same, David brings his own style, personality, energy and connection with his LGBT community to the "centre stage", rather than leaving it in the wings... He has built up a very successful business simply by bringing his authentic brand and then working bloody hard to take advantage of the opportunities that were presented to him.  Today he is well known in the US, both inside the Financial Planning world, and in his home town of L.A. because of the way he's been able to put some energy and excitement back into talking about your Finances.  The fact that he's done that on TV, whilst flying the flag for those in the LGBT community is even more inspiring.  And all this coming from the son of an NFL footballer who grew up in a very traditional suburb in California... When I saw David on stage at the XYPN conference, his passion and energy was plain to see...  He's forged a path for others in the LGBT community to follow in his footsteps.  To believe in themselves beyond their own ability to be great at what they do... but to do it in a way where they can truly be themselves, without the fear of needing to downplay or hide who they are. Whether it's on TV set... or by reading one of his blogs - or hopefully listening to this Podcast - you can't help but connect with David and everything he is doing for himself and his amazing community. I hope you enjoyed this episode as much as I enjoyed being a part of the "The David Rae CFP" hour... Episode 24 – Dylan and Luke – two paths to the same destination. Masters of their own destiny!
There are different paths that we can take on our Financial Planning journey and today's guests are walking two of them - both very different from each other - yet with the same end goal in mind.  To be the owners of boutique Financial Planning practice that is something they have built, and that they can call their own. Dylan Martin and Luke Grundy are around the same age, yet they have completely opposite stories on how they got into Financial Planning... one came from a Theatre background, single and ready to take on the world... the other straight from University and already with his first child.   The journey's that they have taken canvass the two most common forms of how young Advisers are getting into owning a practice these days.  One from a Succession Plan and the other via a newly formed Start Up. But just because they've walked opposite roads to get to where they are today, it doesn't mean that they don't face the same challenges.  In our Podcast we explore their histories and how the got into Financial Planning, the challenges of working in a firm where you might believe their is something more out there, how they went about making the big Strategic decisions that needed to be made in their business...education....the future post the Royal Commission and lot's more. Episode 23 – Cristina and Stephanie – life long friends who decided to bring Mana to those needing financial empowerment
Sometimes in business good things come to those that wait...  And that definitely seems to be what is going to happen for lifelong friends, but only months long business partners Stephanie and Cristina.  Coming to the business with completely different skill sets and views on how they think (one is super analytical and one is super 'gut instinct') could be seen as too big of a risk to take... especially when your starting a business with your best friend.  But what you'll hear in Cristina and Stephanie's story is that they are completely in sync - and everything they are trying to build, is designed to bring out the best in each other. Their story begins way back in college, where one junior and one senior became best friends - even if one of them could come across a bit snarky at times (by her own admission), and then journey's through their blossoming careers on different sides of the Financial divide - one in Funds Management and one Auditing Fund Managers, to where they are today - only 2 months into their new Financial Planning firm - Mana FLD. When I met Cristina and Stephanie in St. Louis in September they came across as though they'd been in business together for years... it is that trust and confidence in each others ability to see what is needed to make new ideas work, that I believe will help them create an amazing and successful business that helps them give "Mana" back to themselves, each other and their lucky clients. In our Podcast, they both share their views on what is right and wrong about the industry - especially on the institutional side - as well as what they plan to do to fix it through Mana.  They share how their business is going in the very early stages (and some of their lead numbers would put established bigger businesses to shame!) and what they've got planned for the first 12 to 24 months. As someone who's business is coming up for it's 10 year anniversary it is easy to become complacent and also a bit jaded about the future of the Industry (as it moves towards the profession we want it to become).  That is why it is so invigorating and inspirational to spend time with a couple of people who are super excited to be starting out in Financial Planning.  Whoever said our Industry isn't an attractive place for new start up businesses clearly hasn't met Stephanie and Cristina yet! I hope you enjoy listening to their story... Episode 22 – Reuben Zelwer – from the tragedy of losing a business partner to giving back in his community and so much more
For someone who has the majority of his Financial Planning career still ahead of him, Reuben's already faced more challenges and heart aches in business and in life, than most of us could ever imagine.  Starting out fresh faced with a degree in Accounting, Reuben tried the path of most accounting grads - off to a Big 4 firm he went.  But he quickly realised that life wasn't for him - his heart and passion was destined to lead him to the world of a boutique community focused Financial Planning practice. Some would say that from that decision, Reuben landed the holy grail - a great Planning job in a firm with a constant stream of good quality client leads, and before he knew it at the ripe old age of 27 - equity was put on the table to become an owner in the firm.  But of course the story doesn't play out that way.... a business separation dragged through mediation - years of stressful separation, a new beginning in a new firm, with a new soon to be business partner would see things starting to look up again for Reuben. But a phone call early one Melbourne morning would change Reuben's life and practice forever... In our Podcast, Reuben shares his story with all of his highs and lows...and in classic Reuben way he just gets that from time to time "things will be a little bit shit from - but you've just got to keep on going".  Through it all he's been true to himself and what he is passionate about! Reuben also shares how he works on his other passions, working in the broader Jewish community to help those that need financial help, but might not be able to afford it.  Reuben is just like us... a regular guy that wants to help people with their money, and he's had to do it while facing some of the toughest challenges that could happen to anyone in business.  He's done it with a smile on his face because things could always be worse...
