E1 Resetting from Trauma with Dr Janina Scarlet Clinical Psychologist & Bestselling Author 11/2/22
In our first ever episode on the reset Mind Podcast, we are privileged to have Dr. Janina Scarlet, a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, an award-winning author, and a full-time geek. She’s written ten books, her first “Superhero Therapy,” Part self-help book, part comic book, published December 1 2016 by the amazing Little, Brown Book Group, part of the British Hachette Publishing group.   Dr. Scarlet is the recipient of the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award by the United Nations Association for her work on Superhero Therapy. Her book has amazing illustrations by the renowned Wellington Alves who has an incredible portfolio of comic book artwork for comics and graphic novels for Marvel and DC Comics which include The Avengers, Spiderman, and Ant Man. Her other books include Harry Potter Therapy, Therapy Quest, Dark Agents, Super-Women.   Her latest book is “It Shouldn’t Be This Way.”, published October 2021 is a departure from her previous style of books, a book that was born out of the challenges of the COVID pandemic and lockdown two years ago, which discusses the concept of acceptance, inspired by ACT or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.     Dr Janina Scarlet has contributed chapters for fourteen other books including Star Wars Psychology, Captain America vs. Iron Man Psychology, and Game of Thrones Psychology.   As a teen, she was inspired by the X-Men, later developing her Superhero Therapy to help patients with anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Her Superhero Therapy concept incorporates characters from popular culture, mostly Superheroes and other characters from books, movies, TV shows and video games into evidence-based therapy (such as cognitive-behavioural therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy) to help people to learn to become their own version of a superhero in real life (IRL). Her books are written for people of all ages and written to help treat anxiety, depression, PTSD, chronic pain and chronic illness, substance abuse disorders, eating disorders, and other issues.   She also has a podcast channel Superhero therapy co-hosted by Dustin McGinnis, where they analyse the psychology of the superhero, how they evolve, and the moments where ordinary people must transform into a superhero, as we all have a superhero in us all.   As well as being a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, and author, she is a TEDx speaker, and a full-time geek, and is a regular guest favourite at COMICON. Her work has been featured on the BBC, NPR, Sunday Times, CNN, The New York Times, Forbes, and many other media platforms and publications. She currently works at the Centre for Stress and Anxiety Management in San Diego.   Dr Scarlet and I connected 6 years ago to discuss the potential of cooperating to develop a mental health app and have remained in touch since.   This podcast was recorded 11 February 2022, in which discussed Intergenerational Trauma, something she and I both understand and experienced. Less than two weeks after we recorded this podcast, the country where she was born was invaded by Russia. The term Intergenerational Trauma has much more significance now.   Dr Scarlet is a Ukrainian-born refugee, she survived the explosion of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in 1986, when she was exposed to radiation suffering serious health issues, as well as persecution. Her family immigrated to the United States from Ukraine when she was 12. She is now campaigning to support people in Ukraine and was on CBS explaining how we can all support the people of Ukraine, a nation in trauma. Ironically the topic we arranged to discuss on this podcast back in December 2021 was trauma. Let Go and Reset You - My Gift to You for 2022
To start off the New Year and the first episode in this podcast channel, The Reset Mind, I recorded a guided relaxation audio I originally recorded for myself and a few friends. It’s helped those who have listened so far, and still listening, to take the focus of unwanted intrusive thoughts, helping with clearing the mind of obstacles, self doubt, and to focus on achieving their goals, improving their mindset and mental clarity, in some cases emerging from the audio feeling good, refreshed and relaxed. It’s a 30-minute reset you can listen to at night before bed, or after a day of work to help you get the most out of that ‘ME TIME’, and be more mindful and present. Listen at least three nights in a row, ideally for three weeks, and whenever needed after that. Most of all, relax, let go, reset, and enjoy. Happy New Year - Med Bukey
