The Replay Booth
Ed Scimia
The Replay Booth is all about over-analyzing the sports that take place in sports movies, while putting a lot less emphasis on the movie side of the equation.
Men with Brooms
Did you know that Ed is an avid curler? He sure is! On the latest episode of The Replay Booth, Ed is joined by fellow curler (and frequent teammate) Kelsey Schuder to talk about Men with Brooms, a 2002 Canadian comedy about curling, romance, and astronauts. And many other things (there's a lot going on in this movie).  Of course, our focus is on the curling action, which leads to more than a few questions. Just how big is the Golden Broom bonspiel? Just how much damage are these curlers doing to the ice? And does anyone even try to exemplify the spirit of curling in this film? All this and more in a very special episode for a very niche audience! Men with Brooms stars Leslie Nielsen and Paul Gross. SHOW NOTES The Wonder Years episode in question is "Soccer," the 7th episode of the show's 5th season. It initially aired in November 1991, well before curling was popularized in the United States by coverage in the Winter Olympics. The Tragically Hip are not retiring, nor did they get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Instead, the band made headlines for an unfortunate reason: they embarked this year on their final Canadian tour after lead singer Gord Downie was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

The Mighty Ducks
Ed and Adam are back to discuss the 1992 youth hockey movie The Mighty Ducks! It turns out there's not much hockey in this hockey film, but there's still plenty to talk about. How are the Hawks still stuck in this league? Does Gordon Bombay ruin the life of a young Adam Banks? Would the movie have been improved if Fulton Reed remained a "Mysterious Large Child?" And exactly how did Goldberg, a child with no skill or interest in goaltending, get tasked with playing goalie?  The Mighty Ducks stars Emilio Estevez, Lane Smith, and a young Joshua Jackson. SHOW NOTES We talk a lot about a podcast called The Quack Attack, which has now recorded 100 episodes on the Mighty Ducks series. Check it out! Here's the Urban Dictionary definition of "cake eater." More research reveals that this term clearly existed prior to the movie, though it seems likely that the film sparked a resurgence in its use.

Major League
It's the first episode of The Replay Booth! It's the show where two guys watch sports movies, and analyze the sports - but not so much the movie. To kick off the show, we're talking about Major League, the 1989 film about a fictional Cleveland Indians team that defies the odds to win a divisional title (still an outlandish premise for the Cleveland teams of that era).  Was Lou Brown a great manager, or did he abuse his starting pitchers because he had no bullpen - either figuratively or literally? How bad is this Indians lineup? Are the Yankees really all that good? And why would you throw Pedro Cerrano an 0-2 fastball? All this and some discussion of Jake Taylor's off-the-field issues in a tidy not-quite-two-hours format. SHOW NOTES Here's the link to the alternate "ending" that significantly alters the film's plot. And here's Bob Uecker talking about furries! Too good to miss. In case you can't find it, the second part is here. For the record, Ed would like to see Noah Syndergaard pitch in the first must-win postseason game for the Mets, but Terry Collins might disagree.
