The Reckless Pursuit
The Reckless Pursuit
A Safe Place for Christians to Ask Unsafe Questions - We are for the spiritual nomads, the outcasts, and the ones who desire to ask the hard questions. A shelter in the desert, a safe place to share our thoughts, our hopes, and our dreams. We are pursuing the Truth and we don’t care about the consequences. We invite you to come and sit at our table and be a part of our tribe. We are brave. we are bold. We are, The Reckless Pursuit.
151 - Christianity and Cursing: a 101 Crash Course on the Power of Intent
Does God care if we curse or swear? What makes a word bad or good in the eyes of God? --- Let’s be honest. We have all had that moment where some random person takes out their bad day on us. We are driving to the store to get cut off by some bloke on the phone. Our boss is in a pissy mood and chews us out for work they didn’t do. Our spouse had a rough day and snips at the first words out of our mouth. And of course, our first thought in these situations has at some point been something a bit… nasty. Then there are those times you get up to get a drink of water in the middle of the night only to realize you don’t have any. So you fumble downstairs with the lights off (You don’t want to wake anyone.) just to catch your toe on the corner of a cabinet. “D@** that piece of $&*%”! What, just us? Okay then. But how much does God care about this? Our traditional upbringing says that curse words are sinful. But is it the word or the intent? What makes a word a curse? When does a prayer become profanity? What instance of saying God out loud strays from casual conversation to taking His name in vain? Welcome to Christian cursing and the power of intent. This is a 101 on what our words say about our faith (and what our faith says about our words). --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! 150 - Gaslight Gospel: Spreading the good news without spreading your agenda
Jesus never tore anyone down to rebuild them in His image. Jesus did not gaslight. Jesus saw truth in every soul. --- Why do we feel the need to tear someone down in order to build them back up? THat is such an American mentality isn't it? Why preserve something original and beautiful when we can bulldoze it and build a highrise on it’s grave? Who cares about preserving the individuality! For our 150th episode, we took a walk through nature (Sorry about the crunching sounds) and had an in depth talk about gaslighting within the Christian faith and how to properly perform the great commission. We discuss what it looks like to share the good news, how to show the love of Christ without stripping people of their unique identity, and how authority does not mean trust. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! 149 - Stepping Away from Our Spiritual Baggage (to move forward in Christ)
The Spiritual journey begins when we give ourselves permission to take the next step away from our past burdens. --- Welcome to 2021 and episode 149 of The Reckless Pursuit! It’s time for new expectations, new goals, and a new episode! This week, we are talking about the power our minds have to dictate our emotions. We discuss how a new year is as good a time as any to choose to let go of our hurts and push into spiritual healthiness, as well as how it doesn’t take a new year to make those mindset shifts. We also touch on where The Reckless Pursuit is heading as we move forward into 2021. We feel that for many of us, it is time to put one foot in front of the other so to speak. To begin furthering our spiritual journey. It does us well to annalize the baggage we once carried to learn what is necessary for our spirits and what is unnecessary weight but sooner or later we must lay it down and move away from it. To simply unload one’s burdens does not help our journey if we do not then continue onward. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! 148 - A Year of Finding Christ Through Finding Ourselves
How did we find more of Christ in 2020? By looking deeper into ourselves and pursuing our God-Given Passions. --- 2020… whew. What a year and while 2021 doesnt mean we are out of the woods, it sure feels like a much-needed reset. But despite the seeming chaos befalling the globe, 2020 offered many of us a new perspective and a new way to view life. From the mindfulness of others to tangible things like working remotely or being on the front lines of necessity, we have learned to adapt and grow (well, kind of.) This week, we are taking a look back at 2020 and how our Spiritual Journey has progressed. We talk about how we found God by finding and understanding more of ourselves and how to lay down Spiritual Obligation. It’s been a crazy, life-altering year but if we know where to look, there is much to be learned, more to be gained, and even more yet to find. 147 - Christmas Can Be Simple (And You Don't Have To Be In The Spirit)
Christmas doesn’t have to be elaborate and you are not wrong for not feeling that Christmas magic. --- 2020 has been one crazy year and low and behold, it’s already Christmas Week once again! It’s come so quickly for a year that has dragged on… A lot of us have guilt wrapped up in the holidays. Maybe we feel as if we have to have over family but are cautious due to the fact that there is a global pandemic. If you are like Cody, there’s a lot of pressure to muster up a certain feeling to make the holiday season seem fulfilled. Whatever this holiday brings you, we are here to tell you that the spirit of this season does not have to be exclusive to this season. You don’t have to feel normal or be in the “Christmas spirit”. Oh, and Christmas doesn’t have to be extravagant to be meaningful. So grab a hot drink and pull up a chair. Let’s have a Christmas/holiday chat and enjoy the simple things because, in the end, they are the most rewarding of all. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! 146 - Who Cares if You Claim to be a Christian (Actions are Louder than Words)
to claim Christianity isn’t a mantra or title, it’s a constant choice to exhibit the purest love above all else. Actions speak louder. --- There was a time that we wanted to know if someone proclaimed to be a Christian. It helped dictate how we felt about someone. But as time went on, we learned this was more idolizing a thought than truly loving Christ in someone else. This week is a quick episode on why actions speak louder than words. Our first goal isn’t to figure out someone's religion but rather to see the spirit in which they operate. Oh, and to help shine the love of Christ their way. It’s amazing how much easier it is to love your neighbor when there are fewer conditions to that love. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! 145 - Burning Bridges (Why We Are Terrified of Taking a Few Steps Back)
Burning bridges is seldom the best idea when it comes to maintaining relationships and progressing your life forward. --- Arson is rarely a good idea. This is true both in reality and metaphorically. Yet often our first reaction when moving from one point in life to another is to burn that previous bridge to a pile of ash. But what if we realized we made a wrong turn along the way? We hate making wring turns. Even more, we hate admitting when we made wrong turns. So often it’s easier in life to cut off where we came from to prevent us from going back. I mean, in some instances that seems understandable. But when that means cutting off potentially healthy relationships, this ends up causing more harm than help. We like to use the analogy of a draw bridge. Sometimes the road needs to be closed to your kingdom but seldom do we want to destroy the path altogether. This week we are talking about boundaries, the spiritual journey, and how to maintain relationships even though we have moved on to a new horizon. We chat about when backtracking is needed, what the point of a spiritual drawbridge is, and how we can strive to protect our inner kingdom while maintaining a healthy relationship with both those of like mind and those who are still in a place you once called home. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! 144 - The Unpardonable Sin: What Is It and Can We Commit It?
All sin can be forgiven except for one, or so we have been told. But what even is this so-called Unpardonable Sin? And can we commit such an act? --- If you have spent any time in a traditional church you have probably heard a bit about the unpardonable or unforgivable sin. You know, that verse in Matthew where Jesus basically says that blasphemy gets you a one-way ticket to hellfire and you’re basically screwed… But does it actually say that or are we just making stuff up? What does that verse actually mean? What’s the context behind Jesus’ message? How are we to know if we’ve already goofed up and are destined to be the next slow cooker meal in the underworld? This week we are talking about the unpardonable sin. We discuss current views held within the Christian faith, a bit of the background that brought this little encounter into the bible, to begin with, and our personal take on what this traumatizing fear verse means. Spoiler alert: We don’t think it’s fear-based at all. Quite the opposite actually! This episode gets deep and messy so strap in for a bumpy yet rewarding race to the depths of Christian theology. Oh, and get ready to unlearn a few things along the way. This week we talked about: The Unpardonable Sin Contextual clues to help in understanding Who (or what) the Holy Spirit actually is Where the Holy Spirit dwells The trinity What constitutes salvation --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! 143 - Don't be a ButterBall Christian (Spiritual Gluttony)
Spiritual Gluttony: The act of feeding upon those things that divide us rather than unify us. --- All across the United States this week, the dressing will be prepped, casseroles will be assembled, and turkeys will be basted and baked! Thanksgiving is back once again and even though gatherings will most likely be a bit smaller this year, it’s still a time to express our gratitude for life and our love for one another. Oh and one more thing: a time to EAT! SO what better time than America’s favorite food holiday to talk about gluttony! Now, just know we aren’t here to discuss your eating habits and consumption levels. We’ll let you handle that after you face yourself in the mirror that following Friday. But we are talking about Spiritual Gluttony. You know, Spiritual Gluttony. That feeling of needing to know one extra sermon or have just a couple more volunteers. Maybe the church altar call wasn’t as “responsive” as you’d have hoped or maybe you just need to quit being a glutton for reasons to be angry by reading your cousin’s tweets. If it robs you from love then it robs you from Christ and robs Christ from others. So let’s come together (6 feet apart but together) and share in a nice, healthy time of love rather than junk that just makes us desperate for more divisiveness. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community! 142 - Don’t Let Your Inconvenience Become Someone Else’s Burden
How we respond to life’s inconveniences can create a God-filled joy and blessing or can conjure up anger and burden. --- Sometimes things don’t go our way. Maybe we woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Maybe we slept through our AM alarm. Or it could be like what we just learned: that you lost the keys to your bike lick so your bikes are fastened to your camper when you intended to go for a ride. There are many instances in our daily lives that just don’t go our way. Plans get changed. Intentions are left unmet. Sometimes life throws us curveballs but how we respond to these instances can tell us a lot about our faith. This week we are talking about how to not make mountains out of molehills. How to recognize what is actually a problem and what is merely an inconvenience. We talk about how our responses can create or rob us of our joy and how to find blessings in the midst of annoyance. Faith is a beautiful thing so why not give it the right room to grow. --- JOIN THE COMMUNITY: If you'd like to keep the conversation going, we want to invite you, our reckless listeners, to join The Reckless Community!
