Shawn Powers is the Executive Director of the United States Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, a body authorized by Congress to oversee and promote U.S. Government activities that intend to understand, inform, and influence foreign publics. He has a Ph.D. from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California and more than a decade of experience working at the nexus of public diplomacy, development, and national security. In 2015, Shawn authored (with Michael Jablonski) the award-winning The Real Cyber War: The Political Economy of Internet Freedom (University of Illinois Press). Since 2010, Shawn has taught at Georgia State University, where he launched and directed its Center for Global Information Studies and remains an Associate Professor on leave. He has been invited to speak at the Al Jazeera Forum, Austrian Diplomatic Academy, British Broadcasting Corporation, Council on Foreign Relations, United Nations, World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, and over 30 universities. She serves on the Board of Directors of the United Nations Development Corporation. Previously, he also served as: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Deputy Director in the California Office of Homeland Security; Chief of Homeland Security and Intelligence for the Los Angeles World Airports Police Department, and President Barack Obama’s first nominee for Assistant Secretary of the Transportation Security Administration. Dr. Southers is the author of Homegrown Violent Extremism, a book investigating radicalization, recruitment and ideological trends in domestic terrorism and extremism.
