Powers discusses the ways in which the U.S. Department of State is engaging in public diplomacy, examples of embassies excelling in the field, and future trends in public diplomacy. Shawn Powers is the Executive Director of the United States Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, a body authorized by Congress to oversee and promote U.S. Government activities that intend to understand, inform, and influence foreign publics.
He has a Ph.D. from the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California and more than a decade of experience working at the nexus of public diplomacy, development, and national security. In 2015, Shawn authored (with Michael Jablonski) the award-winning The Real Cyber War: The Political Economy of Internet Freedom (University of Illinois Press).
Since 2010, Shawn has taught at Georgia State University, where he launched and directed its Center for Global Information Studies and remains an Associate Professor on leave. He has been invited to speak at the Al Jazeera Forum, Austrian Diplomatic Academy, British Broadcasting Corporation, Council on Foreign Relations, United Nations, World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, and over 30 universities.

She serves on the Board of Directors of the United Nations Development Corporation.
In her personal time, Penny serves on the Innovation Advisory Committee for 92Y and on the Founding Member Committee of Lincoln Center’s Global Exchange.

Dr. Erroll G. Southers is the Director of the Safe Communities Institute and Homegrown Violent Extremism Studies at the University of Southern California Sol Price School of Public Policy, where he is also a Professor of the Practice of Governance.
Dr. Southers also serves as the Director of International Programs of the Department of Homeland Security National Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events (CREATE) at USC. Previously, he also served as: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Deputy Director in the California Office of Homeland Security; Chief of Homeland Security and Intelligence for the Los Angeles World Airports Police Department, and President Barack Obama’s first nominee for Assistant Secretary of the Transportation Security Administration.
Dr. Southers is the author of Homegrown Violent Extremism, a book investigating radicalization, recruitment and ideological trends in domestic terrorism and extremism.
