Ione and Gina are perceptive & charming hosts, their banter & friendship adding a delicious personal touch that leaves me looking forward to settle in & enjoy their weekly culture critique while sipping coffee or painting my nails. Thought-provoking cultural critique sticks with me from each episode, influencing how I perceive cultural phenomena, contributing to my conversations with friends, and catching me up with whatever’s happening online. Re: Frictionmaxxing; I agree with Gina’s understanding that the main element of humor is surprise. Even if we don’t feel“surprise” in a shocked or obvious sense, what makes a punchline, person, or situation humorous is that it in some way deviates from what our pattern-seeking brains expect. Of course, deviation from what is expected can also come in the form of tragedy and loss. That is why we can later laugh at something that was hard in the moment & why horrible situations can seem funny in some twisted way. Either way, increasing our exposure and ability to handle the discomfort of change, and becoming conscious of our unconscious expectations allows us to handle all the changes life throws with more grace, humility, and humor🌻

I was excited about listening to this podcast because the snippets I heard were really interesting. But then I pulled up the Lily Allen episode and only got 15 minutes into the episode before I quit. You all are a bunch of haters and I was disappointed in how you dog piled on Lily Allen. I'm not a superfan of hers, but you were harsh. Be better served putting all that negative energy into becoming better humans.

i've been listening to this podcast for around 6ish months now and i'm absolutely obsessed!!! at the time i discovered the polyester podcast i was in a space where i felt i was lacking feminist media, so finding this was like finding a needle in a haystack. although i don't agree with every single opinion, it's a great way to get my mind thinking and also shift my views on things i haven't considered before!! love the podcast, it's a huge breath of fresh air as someone who is constantly surrounded by conservative media these days.

I don’t know if a review is the space for a comment on an episode but as a middle aged gay man who has always done this “performative” stuff (I have 18 iPod shuffles and just developed disposable cameras yesterday) all my quirks do nothing for me in the very normative gay community I live in but get me not laid. I’m conventionally handsome but in the dating scene here I’d be better off mute. I think the “performative” male idea just comes from normcore uncreative people who can’t conceive of the idea people would do anything off kilter or to revive artistic artifacts for anything but performance when I do it to make art. Anyway another 5/5 episode and a 5/5 review from a gaycel forced into it cause I’m a “performative” freak of nature. I’m constantly rejected for being my quirky don’t get how any of this benefits anyone in the dating pool outside of NYC lol.

Great podcast I thought the discussion on labor in the most recent episode “Are you Too Pretty to Work” was super interesting. I would say the only criticism I have is I do think a reading in women and labor definitely would have made the conversation surrounding women and the labor sphere more nuanced. The Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Fiedericci - honestly anything by her - demonstrates the nuances of how women were excluded in the labor sphere.

Finding this podcast has been such a gift. My two favorite European divas!! Such funny, honest, and well researched commentary. Also Gina’s pronunciation of”Dracula” has me in chokehold

These girls give me the best sleepover conversation. Makes me laugh and also stops the conservative aunt trying to grown in me down in her tracks. Love their nitpicking of culture and also how candid their opinions are. Love them even when I have the hardest time understanding what they said because of the accent, which I love and there is a charm in deciphering and learning new slang. All the love from Mexico 🤍

gina and ione break things down with an amount of critical thought that I feared had been genuinely lost through over saturation of podcasts/social media. the research is always done with integrity and curiosity. I really enjoy their takes on pop cultural and societal issues, I love how they are not afraid to disagree with each other it really shows the strength of their bond and friendship. they are funny, smart and I highly recommend a listen.

Aimless, erratic, doesn’t understand the difference between critique and bashing, not enough research = all you’re doing is asserting your own opinions in different ways vs actually critiquing, way too comfortable generalizing, high school level intellectualizing/generalizing, and immensely entertaining as a result. Keep at it because at least you’re trying, but for the love of your future, older selves who will have to live in a world where all these convos were had publicly, please look deeper and farther back when you’re researching a topic before an episode. Sharing 2 POVs on something that affects large amounts of people of various age, gender, ethnicity, economic status, etc, is not giving anyone (including yourselves) a good picture of an issue or topic. It’s intellectually lazy. The things you’re talking about don’t exist in a vacuum and you’re doing yourself (and us) a disservice by covering these issues, trends and people in such a slapdash manner…. Even if you’re not going for deep dives, you can do so much better. I’m rooting for you, but yeah, please try a little harder and please read some history and philosophy books because it’s going to help you contextualize all these uber contemporary topics you cover each episode.

As a welsh girly living in the US, Gina’s accent brings me so much peace and comfort, and the general banter in this podcast always cracks me up. Probably the first time I’ve heard the nuances of class disparities discussed with such attention to intersectionality on a podcast. These ladies remind me that you can fight the power even while being a silly goose and they are such an inspiration for all of us working class creatives out here grinding <3

Really bad takes in the Brat episode.

The hosts have interesting things to say when I can hear them, but mostly the hosts seem to be mumbling or they have terrible audio equipment. I’ve tried several episodes over the past few months and it seems to be a consistent issue. I’ll pop in every once in a while to see if they got a new mic, but I won’t be a weekly listener until they do.

If you’re going to listen to a podcast, make it this one! Finally women that talk about pop culture moments, beauty standards and more who aren’t afraid to state an opinion and give discourse. It’s definitely not a surface level podcast and it’s genuinely relatable. Love, love, love!

Its wonderful that this podcast manages to provide accessible and intellectually stimulating discourse on pop culture topics. Fun podcast, pretty good takes. The hosts antagonize each other a lot which I find distracting, but I appreciate the cultural commentary overall.

What a relief to find these two. Between their love of Poor Things and disdain for Saltburn, I knew I had found my people within my first few episodes. If you’re looking for a podcast discussing the culture everyone else is talking about with much more discernment, thought, and humor, these are the girls for you too.

I enjoy the topics discussed but because it’s purely audio and maybe because I’m American. The sound quality really makes it difficult for me to focus/ understand. Will return once the sound gets better.

i agree with Ione’s take in the stanley cup episode. most consumer products are really selling you a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist. it’s all in the name of convenience, something that just accumulates and pollutes the earth when we could’ve lived a very functional existence without it. it’s also, however, difficult for me to balance this with wanting nice things. i think poverty is very traumatizing, and companies take advantage of that. once you have income, you want things that you saw advertised all the time that you couldn’t get before. you want ease, you want convenience. yes we should be above it, but i think it’s important to extend compassion because ultimately these companies invest millions into advertising in order to influence your purchases on a psychological level. great podcast, this was my first time listening but i’ll def keep tuning in

I love this podcast. I really enjoy the topics and discourse, and the way everything covered is so enjoyable and silly. It warms my heart that someone cares about speaking to the cr*p in the world that we deserve better than, but still sounds like sitting in on a conversation with great friends.

This show truly has the most insightful, thought provoking conversations about modern pop culture / internet culture. I really appreciate how they’re able to dissect the content we mindlessly consume and add nuance / perspective. Truly a show for the gorls🫶🏻
