Welcome back to The Pokémon Snapshot! In Episode 125, the long-awaited showdown is finally here with "A Rivalry Revival" as Ash and Gary face off in their first-ever official Pokémon battle.

After being built up since the very first episode, the climactic rivalry clash is over in under five minutes when Gary’s Eevee utterly humbles Ash’s Pikachu. From there, Tracey ("Not Brock") finally departs the main cast to sweep floors for Professor Oak, Team Rocket crashes dinner in a direct parody of Japanese television, and a mysterious new quest begins with the GS Ball as the trio packs their bags for Johto.

In This Episode:

  • Farewell to "Not Brock": After 36 episodes of being a third wheel, Tracey finally takes the hint and stays behind to become Professor Oak’s lab assistant—cueing a hilariously fake-sad goodbye from Misty.

  • The Five-Minute Humbling: Ash rides high off his Orange League win, only for Gary’s high-level Eevee to effortlessly counter Pikachu’s attacks and headbutt Ash’s ego straight into the dirt.

  • Oak's High-Tech Mystery: Professor Oak scans the GS Ball with super-advanced technology that displays literal flashing question marks, while subtly finding every excuse to pack Ash's bags and send him away.

  • Team Rocket's Dinner Ambush: Jessie and James bust in with a news camera to raid the Ketchum family dinner table, executing a pitch-perfect parody of the iconic Japanese ambush show Totsugeki! Tonari no Bangohan ("Nice to Meet Ya! Now What's for Dinner?").

  • Next Stop: Johto!: Rather than forging his own path, Ash finds out Gary left town and immediately copies him, setting up the original trio's trek toward Azalea Town to deliver the GS Ball to "just Kurt".

  • Who’s That Pokémon? Grimer: Jeff breaks down Grimer’s industrial sludge origins, the Japanese Dorotabō mud-spirit, Alola’s crystallized toxin teeth, and the ironic tragedy of modern sanitation driving Kantonian Grimer toward extinction.

Question of the Week:Ash packs up his life and leaps into a completely uncharted region to pursue a new goal. What was the most challenging, but ultimately rewarding, adventure or life leap you have ever taken? (Josh reflects on moving out to rural Kansas for a blind teaching gig that shaped his entire future, while Jeff looks back on surviving a 12-hour solo flight to Tokyo as a college sophomore).
