On this episode of "River of Words", host Wendy McVicker talks with poet Jennifer Schomburg Kanke about her new collection, "Little Stone, Little Stone". Kanke discusses how her experience with ovarian cancer shaped the collection and why she questions the language of being a cancer “warrior” or “survivor.” The conversation explores delayed diagnosis and medical dismissal, ovarian cancer awareness, and Kanke’s poems about other people who have experienced the disease. Kanke also discusses her use of poetic form, meter and research, and how writing helped her work through the complicated emotions surrounding cancer and survivorship.
