What we really mean to our mothers, the true depth of her emotion, her unlimited capacity to give love, we will never really understand. Unless we experience it ourselves as mothers.
From babies to infants, from toddlers to school-goers to tweens, the most important woman in our life is usually our mother. And then the time comes for us to fly away and conquer the world. When this situation hits, most mothers don’t know what do. They want to express the fact that they might struggle to cope without you, but they don’t want to distract you from what life has in store for you either.
So when the time came for me (the only child to my parents) to leave home, I could only imagine what my mother was going through – so what did I do? I did what I know to do, I wrote a song about it, which is the one you just heard. The song takes a mother’s perspective – and it talks about that first night that she is away from you. How does she sleep? Does she sleep at all? What emotions is she going through knowing that her postal address and yours are never going to be the same again?
When I sang this song for the first time at a concert in Auckland, many mothers in the audience were moved to tears.
The song opened the floodgates, so to speak. The song brought forth the love they felt for their child or children, the hopes that they had for their son or daughter. And by doing that I was able to form a deep connection with the mothers in the crowd, most of whom I had never met. This connection, built on a foundation of love, warmth and hope told the mothers in the crowd that I knew what they were going through. That I was aware of what they were feeling deep down. And that despite being strangers, we had a common glue that held us together.
This is the power when words and tune come together to become song. This is the power of love, warmth and hope.
