The parallels between the parents’ radicalization, beliefs, and specific Q anon terms they use and my parents is uncanny. I can’t talk to my parents about politics since COVID, and it’s cathartic to hear how you are handling the necessary conversations more tactfully than I can. I’ve mourned the loss of the people who they used to be, and it’s so important to share these conversations. I’m only in to episode 3, and I’m hooked. Thank you!

I’m the oldest daughter of a MAGA father and step‑mother, now the black sheep of the family. We had a great relationship before Trump (respectful, communicative, never a real fight) and I thought it was gone forever. Your podcast gave me hope. Hearing Mary Jo listen, learn, and slowly understand the truth about MAGA made me believe reconciliation might one day be possible. Thank you for having the conversations so many families desperately need.

I’m always amazed at how hard you all try to get through to your parents. Mom gives us a glimmer of hope and then doubles down. It’s quite fascinating at how far off the deep end rhe supporters will go. The patience of Job is what it must take😂 I continue listening knowing that I will be enraged at some point… it’s the train wreck you have to listen to.

If only all families with polar and divisive values, religious and political beliefs could have a podcast that helps connect them like this one does. I truly think that the podcast hosts (3 of them especially) could make a killing financially - and make a meaningful difference - by helping other families this way. Great show.

It’s funny, it’s heavy, it’s frustrating, it’s endearing. I love the reason behind the show. Bob is horrible, but I feel like I care about him at the same time. If you listen from the start, you’ll begin to care about each member of this family. No matter what side they’re on.

I’ve only listened to the first episode. I’m not sure I can take more. But your patience and love for your parents is really lovely. I’m lucky in that my parents both passed before MAGA. I shudder to think what would have become of our family.

This podcast is needed for those who have no real life connection to a maga lunatic. The mental gymnastics a maga supporter is consciously willing to preform is well documented in this under-rated gem of a podcast. Give it 15 minutes and you will be floored by what you hear from a seemingly intelligent, yet very racist, woman and her husband.

i love the show & listened to most of the first two years after discovering it for myself last month. i decided to skip forward to the most recent episodes, & i have to say - the tone has really devolved. you guys used to get annoyed with each other, but you were still amused & the love was clearly still there. while i don’t doubt that you still love each other, the civility has really declined. while i’m politically more aligned with Chad & Haley, i can’t listen if you’re just going to resort to yelling HEEEYYYYY over Bob. While the decision to just yell in protest over a parent who won’t listen is understandable, it doesn’t make for something i want to listen to in a podcast. that’s not a criticism; Haley, i think you’re otherwise awesome & generally quite insightful. Shouts to Chad for bringing this all together. Thank you Chad for staying firm with your mom on the April 2nd episode about the murder of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Her reasoning in flawed and frankly dangerous. I don’t think she understands how her stance weakens her constitutional rights. We all need to stick up against wrongdoing by agencies that trample our rights otherwise we are handing that power over to them. We all need to agree that shooting a protester in the street is a frightening overreach of power. I wrote a review much earlier saying I couldn’t listen to this podcast anymore because of how your parents have justified and downplayed the lives of my neighbors. I have stuck with you guys because even though it is hard hearing your Parents’s view, I appreciate the way you and your sister articulate your stance. I wish that people would understand how scary and traumatic it was to be in Minnesota and have federal agents unlawfully attack US citizens. Protesting does not warrant being shot multiple times in the street. That is completely unAmerican and as Americans we need to protect our rights no matter what political group we affiliate with. Besides, I can tell you that the majority of the protesters were regular citizens and neighbors standing up against the injustices and wrongdoing of innocent people and their constitutional rights. This is what America should be about. The administration is treating a group of neighbors working together to keep our community safe as terrorist groups. It is insane and something I never thought I would have to deal with. I hope people wake up and understand that we are stronger together. Fighting each other is distracting us from holding these corrupt leaders accountable. How has this administration made life easier for the average American? They are getting richer off our pain. I have never felt this depressed and destitute about our country’s future but living in Minneapolis has shown me hope. No matter what your background or ethnicity we need to be humane to each other and realize that when we all do better, we all do better.

Chad! After the 3/18 episode I’m convinced ML is doing the boomer thing of “respect the office of president” and conflating it with “respecting President Trump”. Same thing with the war and the troops. Like you guys said in the 3/15 podcast you can SUPPORT THE TROOPS without SUPPORTING THE WAR. It’s on her to figure out that there’s a difference!!!

I’m listening to the recent episode where Mary Lou and Bob agree to sending Haley’s kids to war in Iran. This is so hard to hear and Haley’s warranted gut reaction. And then Mary Lou’s adamance that there will be another 9/11 type event just after advocating for supporting military. And their racism- we’re fighting for our way of life. Referring to Muslim. Calling female directors ”woke”.

I love this podcast but it can get so heavy. As a father to all girls, it’s tough to listen to the March 8 episode when the parents won’t support their daughter and other victims. Mocking her instead. Despicable.

The Mom and Dad are so deep in the cult ..I can’t listen. The mental gymnastics is exhausting.

I only made it 20 minutes into one episode. The dad is constantly interjecting random insults and not letting others, including his wife, finish a sentence.

I’m hooked after just one episode. This conversation sounds like my dad and I word for word (if I were able to last that long). I appreciate she is willing to participate. I’ve already accepted cutting ties with my dad.

As a moderate and a longtime Independent, I respect and appreciate the premise of this show so much. I was hoping to hear some thoughtful debate on the issues dividing “our United States,” to come away feeling some hope for reconnection over shared American values, and to maybe even get some ideas for navigating the chasm between my own right and left leaning family members. Unfortunately, the parents mentally struggle to process information or to actually answer a question. They get stuck in illogical thought loops, are easily distracted by unrelated clips, and sometimes just start barking out random insults. Anything they don’t like is twisted into, “you don’t love America,” illustrating their belief that the only way to love America is in whatever way they do, which is absolutely stifling and absolutely UN-American. I do find myself wondering if there is some age-related cognitive decline. The REAL necessary conversation might actually be, “is it time to take the car keys away” - ie, as Americans, do we need to take a hard look at if an aging voting population should be trusted with the keys to our democracy? Should there be a cognitive test for voting? Regardless, the things they say to their children week after week are so cruel and heartless and at times disgusting, it’s become downright cringe to hear them end each episode claiming to LOVE them. When it comes to “love” and “Communism,” Bob and Mary Lou don’t seem to understand either. PS - Biden was not in office at any point in 2020.

I listened to the Alex Pretti episode and that’s all I can take. I understand why this podcast exists; good on the kids for trying to talk some sense into their fascism-loving parents - but there are so many other things to listen to that don’t make me want to smash my head into a wall.

I’ve tried to listen and I’ve followed these guys on IG and other platforms. It finally occurred to me that all we are doing is supporting these hate mongers to have a platform. And the kids are simply monetizing their parents’ hatred, racism, homophobia and MAGA propaganda! I’ve unfollowed them now and hope that they have the day they deserve!

It is remarkable that a man tells people to go read when he himself cannot read.

Your mom’s lack of empathy for Alex Pretti is beyond all imagination. I’ve been listening for a couple of years now and I thought on this one. She would at least give her “That’s not right” speech. But what she said is disgusting and I’m done.

I just can’t anymore. My question to the kids is how do you continue to have a relationship with people who are so fundamentally different. At what point do you say enough? I think the father is beyond help, but for Mary Lou to be ok with Americans being murdered and toddlers being arrested, I think there is no point in continuing to listen. The parents are vile.

The only value in this podcast is the lib sibs arguing with their parents. It is clear that their father is one of the most ignorant disgusting people on the planet, and their mom is a typical airhead who has no concept of world events. It’s a larger statement that she was a teacher no wonder our education system has declined.

.’d been seeing clips on TikTok and I’m glad I decided to give it a try. I do like to try and see both sides and am always curious how the right views things. Saying that, I’m often left dumbfounded and angered after I do and this podcast has me feeling the same. I can’t wrap my brain around their thinking. Even when your mom agrees with some of the things you say, her love for maga/trump has blinded her into stupidity. And your dad, there is just no other way to describe him other than rage bait. The racism and brainwashed attitude is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. It seems like almost every day since trump started his second term we have a new story to be outraged about and now I find myself counting down to the next episode to hear you all discuss it.

I saw some hate for this pod on Threads that led me to leave this review. I’ve been listening to TNC for a little over a year now, and I can’t thank this family enough for opening this conversation up for listeners. The Kultgens remind me of my own family, and I love that they don’t listen to the noise of people telling them to go no contact with one another. Love is louder than the noise. So many podcasts centered around the analyzation of Trump and his “policies” usually go two ways. One way is that the hosts are so far against Trump that they take the time to focus on very minute details of his daily life and examine them, and in my opinion that gets majorly annoying after a short time. The other way these usually go is that the hosts brand themselves as centrists and sometimes defend Trump, and that just makes me think they’re MAGAs in disguise. Enter The Necessary Conversation. Chad, you do a splendid job of presenting facts in an unbiased manner and let the those facts draw a response from your staunchly MAGA parents, whom I believe represent the entire MAGA crowd very accurately. I know you try so hard to make them understand but it feels like you’re talking to a brick wall. Aside from that, I really love how up to date and accurate your information is, and that you truly address the most important topics that we face in this country pertaining to its government and leaders. The podcast gives us a truly amazing insight into both the MAGA cult world and the world of leftists/liberals/democrats. It has shown me how sane and intelligent the left is while also showing me how ignorant, racist, uninformed, and brainwashed the right is. As of today, this is my favorite podcasts and I’m always waiting patiently for Wednesday and Sunday to arrive so I can spend time in your family’s bubble. It’s the only podcast where I have found myself arguing out loud as I listen! Lol!

Great job on a very important show

This should he required listening for all Americans. A clip popped up on TikTok this morning and Im so glad it did. This show will resonate with so many families.

This podcast makes me glad I don’t have parents. The dad is just awful in every sense of the word. Every episode he just yells the same thing 50 times. The mom is just as bad just not as abrasive. They are racist and filled with so much hate. Every episode fills me with anxiety. A conversation with these people is pointless.

I haven’t been listening for too long, but I have been long enough to get a sense of what happens on this podcast and how everyone might react to things on it. This podcast is so important and it is a real time encyclopedia of this deeply troubling age and how average people think of it. To Bob and Mary Lou, I know you are both smart people. You are part of a wonderful family that needs you to see facts. You must know something’s wrong.

I commend the son and daughter’s patience and efforts. I don’t know what I’d do if my parents were MAGA. I’ve only listened to one episode (so far?) that the dad sat out, but from reading other reviews I don’t think I can tolerate listening to him. The mother alone is terrible, stupid and hateful. I support what you’re doing but I’m sorry I really don’t think I can get through listening.

Absolutely love the show and found you guys from Tik Tok. It’s like being at my parents house and hearing the same stuff. Sometimes it’s hard to listen to but the have dig their feet so far in the ground and do not want to be wrong even though they know most of the things this administration is doing is wrong. This father speaks only with hate, he doesn‘t seem to like anybody or anything, not even his own children. I admire Chad‘s patience. I can not listen to the father often, his speech is poisonous.

I want to listen more, but recently I’ve found any episode with Bob has become almost unlistenable. If you aren’t on board with “killing everyone” you are just a “communist” and dismissed.

People like this mother are why USA lags behind all rich democracies in all measures of well-being. For decades, they voted into public office law makers who created a system that extracts wealth from the 99% to enrich the 1%, made voting systems that don’t reflect want the majority need and made every life harder and shorter than any other rich democracy. There is another way to live, but the fears of people like her and corporate greed prevent a healthier, longer life. Good luck to this family. I can’t listen to the mother.

But she is dug in. I, for my own blood pressure, keep saying I’m going to stop listening. In fact, when it’s an episode with Bob, I don’t listen, but read the transcript. I am aware people are around who care so little about people that don’t bow to their dear leader. What I find hard is how these parents show that if it came down to their offspring or DJT, we would know who they’d choose. DJT is laughing all the to the bank…Mary please wake up. You are still capable of empathy. Bob is a lost cause.

This podcast is like me talking with my father-in-law. It is a WILD and eye opening ride!

This is one of my absolute FAVORITE podcasts! I listen to it here as soon as it comes out every Sunday and then go watch the video version on YouTube. There’s so much to take in with MaryLou and Bob’s commentary that I have to hear it TWICE to truly absorb it! Fortunately my folks aren’t MAGA so we don’t have these same experiences but I can only imagine how many people DO have this level of discourse and I imagine seeing Chad and Haley try to navigate through is helpful to their situations. Please keep up this AMAZING work!!!
