I thought I posted this one a long time ago, but it is still sitting here and Apple won’t let me delete it, so here you go: My favorite one so far. Paul is inspiring. First, thank you for making business about more than money. Totally agree. Second, I love Paul’s take on the craft. I share his view. I’m a Christian, so that affects a lot of my thought life. As he spoke, I thought a lot about how God works in people. He doesn’t make us perfect according to the common understanding of that word. He makes us perfect for our purpose in this life. We are His craft and we are to imitate Him in our craft. If you would, listen to that part again, but imagine God talking about how He works in people instead of Paul’s relationship to wood. I have no doubt that I sound like a crazy person to more people than not, but I hope someone can relate. I could ramble on, but let me keep it simple. Thank you guys for the podcast. Keep it up!

Appreciate all the content y’all put out. As a small business owner I learn a lot and am glad to have found likeminded contractors that are selling more than just a job! I’m an electrical contractor building a business based on experience and a higher end over product and service etc.

These guys have positioned themselves as the voice of the generation coming up in the construction industry, but they’re really not a good representation of the majority of the industry. There’s no diversity of opinions, backgrounds, gender, or cultural background represented here, and that’s one of the cornerstones of the construction industry. Try talking to people who are different than you and let them share their experiences uninterrupted.

This podcast has been a huge part of why I am where I am. Started a second career as a carpenter 4 years ago at 30 y/o. The people commitment to excellence, both by the people interviewed here, as well as Nick and Tyler, has helped me so much in setting my path towards a career-long emphasis on quality and professionalism. Tyler- That was awesome a lot great information. Gives contractor an insight on the value of their work and how vet clients. By the way you gotta switch the intro beat. You’re from Dirty Jerz, we know Nick probably listens to Kenny Chesney but you gotta get a better beat for the intro specially with the Rebrand if not you’re hip-hop card is gonna get revoked.

Great show and must listen to anyone in the trades. It’s great for anyone looking to grow their business, perspective in your trade or just to vent frustration of problem areas from running a construction company in today’s economy. It’s been a great add to my podcast line up and look forward to new episodes and old ones.

I’ve been subscribed to this podcast for years now but have just started diving in over the last few months. First episode I listened to, the guys were talking about home construction. Owning a custom iron and woodworking business, and being the dummy I am, I figured this podcast had nothing to offer me in my field and was quick to move on. Now that I am also in the home building arena I picked it back up and instantly regretted neglecting it for so long. Nick, Tyler and their guest drop nothing but gold nuggets episode after episode. Since listening I feel as if my woodworking buisness and my personal self could be 10x what they are now had I tuned in and not been so ignorant. In the age cheaper and faster as we “race to the bottom” these guys are a breath of fresh air in regards to putting the craft back in craftsmanship and bringing respect back to trades. The last 6 months I’ve been exploring podcasts and not just building centric ones. The Modern Craftsman is a gem in so many ways for any business owner but especially for anyone operating in the construction/trade/vendor world around the main topics. At first the 2 hour time commitment seemed a bit much, but in a world Of surface level content and scratch and sniff stickers this show stands OUT of its depth of character! I am extremely impressed and in awe of Tyler’s ability to ask such thoughtful and probing questions. Nicks commitment to quality and thirst for knowledge is incredibly inspiring and motivating. It is very refreshing to hear from guys that are going through the same thing I am. I’ve been in business with a partner for 8 years. We have always been a trim sub and started a small cabinet shop about 5 years ago. This year we are starting to build houses. I can relate (on a smaller scale) with Nick and his journey through growing a business. I have been a listener for about 2+ years and these guys and their guests have been very motivational for me on my journey into my self employment dream. I have taken the steps and have acquired my contractors insurance and license and am that much closer to my dreams. And I give much credit to this podcast!

Episode #168, you lost me. Your podcast is based on interviewing guests within the AEC industry to provide education, entertainment, and information to the listeners. I’ve enjoyed this show in the past, I really have. As a licensed architect and former builder myself, I found it enlightening to hear the multiple sides of the industry and their stories. However, this guest, C. Brandon Ingram is being presented as something he is not. He is not an Architect, he has no license to practice architecture, and therefore it is illegal for him to call himself an architect or represent himself as “practicing architecture.” While I am not diminishing the talents of Mr. Ingram, nor his education, neither of which qualify him to be an architect. He is purely a residential designer, and nothing more. This is the second time C. Brandon Ingram has been a guest on this show, (episodes #14 & #168) and the second time he has falsely represented himself as an Architect. In the United States you must have a license to practice architecture, and to call yourself an architect in each state in which you practice. This is a similar licensing process as a doctor or a lawyer. You may think this explanation overkill, but would you want someone who wasn’t licensed as a physician preforming a surgery on you? Would you want someone defending you in court who hasn’t passed the bar exam? The architecture license was created to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public, and not for design. The architecture license represents the authority the state has placed in its holder to provide safe inhabitable spaces and buildings for the public, and the only legal way an individual may call themselves an architect. Simply put, it is illegal for Mr. Ingram to identify himself as an architect. Something that he freely does on his own website while admitting he does not have a license to practice in Georgia where his office is located. Feel free to check the state licensing website, his name isn’t anywhere to be found. I just can’t continue to listen to a podcast that preaches elevating the trades and AEC industry, promoting the next generation, and transparency within careers while undermining the profession of Architecture (either knowingly or ignorantly.) I have worked incredibly hard to break into the architecture profession, and I’ve jumped through hurdles to have the honor of calling myself an Architect. These were all things Mr. Ingram could have also done, but chose not to. You seem like a good group of guys who truly want to see the next generation succeed, but you just lost me at episode #168. Good luck with the show, and I’d love to see the episode names changed to reflect the truth of the situation.

This is a must listen if your in the residential construction industry. Wether you need to be challenged, encouraged, or just entertained, it always delivers. Keep up the good work guys( I do miss Johnny) @jguyconstruction.

I started listening to these guys right around the time I started my own design business, they were actually a driving force that helped me take the leap. Really got inspired by some of the guests they had on and being a new dad myself, I always appreciate the emphasis they put on work-life balance. I’ve learned a lot about every facet of business in this industry by listening to these guys (and the gals they have on the show) but especially the building side of the work, that being said it’s great that they incorporate people from every spectrum of the design and construction world to provide insights on how to be better every day. If you follow either of the hosts you know they offer a trustworthy opinion on how to navigate the modern construction market with the mindset that craftsmanship is above all. Perfect podcast for days when I’m flying solo on interior work. @macjpatterson

I have listened for a long time and have maybe missed only a handful of episodes over the 200+ there are now. Of those, I can't say there is an episode that I didn't enjoy or learn something new from it, even if I didn't agree with the guest. The content is great as always. But I’m slowly moving backwards from GC to carpentry subcontractor. I definitely realize I find more joy being in the field and teaching than I do waiting on the plumber to show up. I have been waiting a bit to write this, but I totally agree with the reviewer a few down that outlines how the podcast has changed from the balanced and organic magic that is once was (for years) into an over-sponsered sort of vanity project for Nick and his business. I have eagerly listened to every episode since it started and very rarely felt the need to turn it off, and it was always bc of the guest and not the hosts. These days I don’t really feel like listening anymore because the fire doesn’t really feel strong, there’s not enough substance for me, and as a one person custom business (not unlike Tyler in size and ambition) not much of the newer content is hitting very close to home. Love you guys for what you’ve done to the industry, miss Johnny for his unique and brutally honest perspective, and feel like the latest shows and interviews have been more PVC than wood.

Love the show, the hosts are all (now both) incredibly knowledgeable in their respective areas of expertise and don't hesitate to willingly share their insights and understandings of construction in all of it's many forms. The guests are always top notch and the casual nature of the podcast makes it easy to listen to while keeping your attention and being highly educational. As an architect, the perspective that Nick & Tyler bring is inspiring, always trying to get the best out of thier projects and talking through everyday problems and solutions. Can't recommend it enough & thanks to Nick & Tyler for putting together great shows every week. Shout-out to Johnny.

Use to be really good. I felt like they enjoyed it much more when they first stated. You could feel that there was a genuine affection for the craft in and of itself. And now I just think it has evolved into Nick’s pet project to add to his self-indulgent “business” portfolio. His desire to become like Brad Levitt has almost entirely eclipsed the initial energy and spirit of the show. Johnny was the only thing counterbalancing the show. Since he left, the show has been felt shallow and plastic and altogether lacking any real feeling. I mean, while maintaining a professional respect for him, even Tyler sounds worn-out by the whole thing. I honestly feel bad for him as he sounds like he is being carried by obligation more than any real desire for the work itself. It’s been sad for me because I started listening to this around episode 20/21. It’s tough moving on but the entire thing has become nearly unbearable. I wish them all the best though.

:update: Ok so after continued listening I have been down rabbit hole after rabbit hole into building science, architectural design, down to the finishing details like tile setting, trim carpentry, and painting. Between these guys and their guests I have completely reset my theories about how a house can be built vs how it should be built. A lot of the nuggets I’ve learned from these guys and their guests have made a major impact in my selection of a home builder for my family’s home build. With what I have learned and continue to learn from this podcast I have been able to have a higher level of involvement with my home designer/builder as we prepare for a home build. It’s incredibly comforting to hear people in my industry talk so openly about everything they deal with both in the professional and personal lives. The long format allows the hosts and the guests to both give each other space to express what their feeling/thinking, and also challenge each other in a supportive and constructive way. I started listening because I was John’s HERS rater a while back, and I’m really glad I did as I’m now a PM at a design build remodeling company. Keep up the great work everyone!

Listening to Nick, Tyler, and previously John every Monday has become part of my Monday morning shop routine. Before the tools even come out, AirPods in, modern craftsman on. I can’t pin point all the times I’ve yelled in my shop to myself or screamed at the 3 of them or the guests. I’ve sent time stamps to friends telling them to listen to this or listen to that. Guys, I’ve been listening to the podcast since the lockdown in 2020. There’s quite a few I haven’t listened to, but I usually listen to 3 or 4 episodes a month. Great conversation and very enlightening content. I always get a few takeaways from every episode, the only exception would be the Danny Wang episode, lol. You guys give me the bug to go out on my own and make a go of it. After 22 years in the carpentry realm I know I have the experience and listening to you and your guests really brings some reality to the dream of business ownership. The ups and downs are inevitable but the rewards can be priceless. Nick, your drive to make NS not only a great company but a place that has a quality company culture and a place where guys can grow and succeed is refreshing in an industry where most owners I know just want to get the job done and pay little mind to the healthy growth of the team doing the building. I enjoy hearing your business insight and your desire for a better future for the building trades. Tyler, your work is remarkable. The way you stay in your lane and know what you want to do and what you want from the business is admirable. I’ve listen to every episode, easy to listen to. The time flies every time

I’m actually local to Tyler & knew of him by driving past his house & seeing his company wrapped truck at the time parked out front. Out of curiosity, because our market isn’t exactly saturated with quality contractors, I followed him on Insta & got to know his work, for which I formed an incredible level of respect. It has had a direct correlation to the level of quality I now seek to produce in my own work. But I grew up outside Boston & followed Nick & John too because the level of outstanding quality was far beyond what I was even used to seeing from the builders I knew growing up. So when I finally heard about the podcast, it was a no brainer. I may never timber frame, but hearing Ted Benson share his lifetime of expertise was fascinating & makes me strive to be better & appreciate a different level of architecture. I might not ever splurge on more premium workwear, but listening to the story & ethos behind 1620 makes me strive to be better. I’ll never design & build 20,000 sq ft compounds in Australia, but hearing Luke Williams’s story makes me strive to be better. There’s life advice, there’s practical advice for trade work, there’s business insight, there’s all sorts of nuggets to find in here. But most importantly, it makes me strive to be better in every aspect of my work & does a better job than anything else I know to keep the craft alive. Keep it up!

If you are young and just starting out in construction, this is an incredible resource for the ins and outs of the business. I am in my mid 20’s and have learned so much from these guys. I really appreciate how they will own up to their daily struggles and it makes me feel a lot better my own issues working with builders. Overall, a great podcast! Thanks guys!

Listening and learning through yours and others struggles is super insightful to anyone in any business. Everyone trips every day in unexpected ways and as a project manager at heart (but in IT) it is really helpful for me to hear how you deal with them through your team meetings/retrospectives.
