Children play sports because it’s fun. But there are tons of benefits to youth sports besides just enjoyment—making new friendships, learning how to communicate, building a sense of community, and becoming a team player are all important reasons why playing sports can help prepare kids for the real world. However, approximately 70% of kids stop playing sports by age 13, says a poll from the National Alliance for Youth Sports. Why? Children usually drop out of youth sports once it no longer becomes fun. That’s what we’re going to talk about today. I’m joined by a panel of three special guests: James Redmon Jr., Louis Whitlow, and Brian Gossett. They’re all three parents and coaches of youth sports team. In this episode, you’ll hear from the panel on: The two biggest sources of pressure that come with high-level sports Why younger phase is really about teaching kids a love for the game The importance of talking to your kid and finding out what they enjoy Why kids are getting burned out with a sport by age 11 or 12 One bad habit many sports parents are guilty of doing

After covering the weather in four states across the Midwest and Northeast, Danielle came to the Tennessee Valley in October of 2021. From tornadoes to hurricanes and blizzards, Danielle has seen it all. Today she’s joined us to talk about must-know severe weather safety, including how we should talk about storms with our kids, what type of plan to have it place, and when to tune into the local meteorologists. We covered: Why North Alabama typically gets more severe weather from March to May How to create a tornado emergency plan for home (even if you live in an apartment) 10 tornado safety tips that could save your life and protect your kids The positive impact of social media on broadcasting weather updates The special sport that Danielle has been participating in since age 5

Over the years, it’s becoming increasingly common to see police officers patrolling the school grounds. While their primary duty is to help keep students and staff safe, you might be surprised to learn the role of a School Resource Officer (SROs) goes beyond law enforcement. In the latest episode, I’m speaking with Lt. Ken Blandenburg from the Monroe County Sheriff's office. As a father of three, Lt. Blandenburg is used to wearing a lot of different hats on any given day. Listen in as he shares more about the day-to-day duties of school police officers, including their focus on educating students on topics like ATV safety, preventing bullying, and peer pressure.
