Mishlei 22:24-25 - The Snare of a Hotheaded Friend (Part 2)(כד) אַל תִּתְרַע אֶת בַּעַל אָף וְאֶת אִישׁ חֵמוֹת לֹא תָבוֹא: (כה) פֶּן תֶּאֱלַף אֹרְחֹתָו וְלָקַחְתָּ מוֹקֵשׁ לְנַפְשֶׁךָ:Synopsis: This morning (10/4/22), in our morning Mishlei shiur, began by reviewing and refining the approaches we took yesterday, venturing into some important side topics - such as the lo taaseh of lo tisna es achicha bilvavecha and the importance of choosing good friends. We then learned Rabbeinu Yonah's commentary which not only provided a beautiful expalanation of our pesukim, but also shed light on other bad middos as well. The hava amina in the first pasuk is exceedingly strange, as is the reason given in the second pasuk. We developed our own approach which was similar enough to an approach I wrote up in 2018, based on Rabbeinu Yonah's commentary. Because I knew we'd only have two days to work on these this week, and we wouldn't be back until Tzom Gedaliah, I thought it best to focus on the MAJOR questions and the MAIN idea without getting bogged down in the details. Before our analysis got underway, we got involved in an important tangent in answering the question: What do we make of the fact that the 30 pesukim beginning with Mishlei 22:17 bear an uncanny resemblance to the Egyptian wisdom literature text known as "Instruction of Amenemope," which seems to have been composed over a century before Shlomo ha'Melech wrote Mishlei? I worried that we wouldn't come up with anything, but we ended up arriving at three complete interpretations: one of our own, one based on Rashi, and one based on Ralbag.
