3179 - Ukraine, Iran, Lula: Critiquing Biden's FP From The Left w/ Matt Duss & Judy Gold
It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy, to round up the biggest stories in foreign policy this week. Then, they're joined by comedian Judy Gold, host of the Kill Me Now podcast! First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Bob Menendez renewing his Jersey bona fides with a brand new corruption case, the House GOP’s ongoing sh*tshow, another Clarence Thomas corruption allegation, labor action, Medicaid and medical debt, and stats on climate change, before watching Shawn Fain lay out the newest strike plan for the UAW. Matt Duss, Sam, and Emma then parse through Bob Menendez’s comedically criminal corruption indictment and the future of his seat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Next, they look to Ukraine as they assess Poland’s rollback of arms support for defense against Russia, the state of Ukraine’s incredibly slow offensive to regain territory, and Biden’s evolving criticism of the operation, before parsing through the absolute failure of Putin to hit his primary (crushing Ukrainian nationalism) and secondary (send a warning to NATO) targets for the war, and where the end of this conflict lies. Wrapping up, Duss explores US policy towards India, Israel, and Saudi Arabia, and the absurd freedom we allow *certain* allies on the international stage. Judy Gold then reflects on her summer and the ongoing success of her book-turned-show “Yes, I Can Say That,” before she walks Sam and Emma through the absurdity of the recent Hasan Minhaj drama, Lauren Boebert’s continuing role in Congress, and her anger towards Trump and Tommy Tubofshit. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma cover Bob Menendez sticking it to the establishment by… taking hundreds of thousands in cash and bars of gold. They also watch John Fetterman speak on accessibility, see the horrifying impact of theocratic fascism on our children, and then watch that theocratic fascism in action with Matt Walsh’s commentary on universal voting. Jeremy Boreing flaunts selling Daily Wire data to DeSantis for pocket change, plus your calls and IMs! 3178 - Black Radicalism Criminalized; Decoding War Hawk Language w/ Orisanmi Burton, David Vine
It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Orisanmi Burton, assistant professor of anthropology at American University, to discuss his recent book Tip of the Spear: Black Radicalism, Prison Repression, and the Long Attica Revolt. Then, she's joined by David Vine to discuss his project entitled "WORDS ABOUT WAR MATTER." First, Emma runs through updates on the filling of Rupert Murdoch’s shoes, the House GOP’s ongoing self-obstruction, Merrick Garland’s testimony, Lina Khan’s FTC, the ongoing labor action of the UAW and WGA, Trump’s skyrocketing polling, another Rudy allegation, Kari Lake’s run for Senate, and Bob Menendez’s old-school corruption, before parsing through the dense black hole of reactionary bigotry and corruption that is the legacy of Rupert Murdoch. Then, Professor Orisanmi Burton dives right into his analysis of prisons as an extension and development of warfare, outlining why this distinction from other analyses of the US Justice System is both necessary and not mutually exclusive from those lenses. Expanding on this, Professor Burton walks through prisons as the domestic grounds for counter-insurgency techniques the US Empire develops abroad, backed by a global network of state actors, before he and Emma step back and walk through the parallels between the lenses of “prison as war” and “prison as slavery.” Next, Orisanmi parses through the legacy of what he dubs the Long Attica Revolt, an extension of the four-day Attica Rebellion in September 1971, exploring how the broader understanding of these riots paints a picture of organized revolution over the months before the incident, and completely counters the bloodless liberal narrative of spontaneous carceral reform. After tackling the evolution of the Attica narrative (despite mass bloodshed at the hands of the state), Professor Burton wraps up by walking through the consistent role of counter-insurgency tactics employed by US Intelligence from COINTELPRO through the ongoing indictment of Cop City protestors, and how prison is maintained as a site of demobilization and discipline. Professor David Vine then joins as he assesses the evolution of the rhetoric of warfare two decades on from the war on terror, exploring how the terms and emphasis – from terror to “special operations” – serve to obscure the immense violence at hand. Professor Vine and Emma then look to the international spread of this rhetoric, from Russia to Israel, as leaders attempt to shirk responsibility for their violence, before they tackle how this rhetoric also serves to dehumanize and monolithize the targets of violence. David leaves us with a message on the importance of direct transparency from the state, particularly when it comes to warfare. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they tackle the absurdity of gender reveals, watch Merrick Garland get reamed for supposedly being anti-TradCath, and Alia calls in to expand on today’s conversation about warfare rhetoric. David Brooks is shocked that alcohol costs money, Matt Walsh takes on trans men in his most recent bigoted tirade, and Michael from Nashville asks for help on a national rail system, plus, your calls and IMs! 3177 - Latest Libertarian Folly & Google's Monopoly Trial w/ Ali Breland, Harry First
It's Hump Day! Sam and Emma speak with Ali Breland, writer at Mother Jones, to discuss his recent piece entitled "A Peter Thiel-Linked Startup Is Courting New York Scenesters and Plotting a Libertarian Paradise." Then, they're joined by Harry First, law professor at New York University, to discuss the antitrust case currently at trial against Google. First, they run through updates on the House GOP’s ongoing meltdown, labor updates on the auto world, yesterday’s special elections, the formation of the American Climate Corps, and conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, before watching Brian Kilmeade see red over the chaos within the GOP. Ali Breland then dives right into his work covering (and uncovering) details behind a Peter-Thiel-linked startup attempting to grift its way to popularity via a minor internet Libertarian community, bringing them on board its project to form the “Praxis Society” – a predictable libertarian utopia that will make them lots of real estate money. After briefly walking through the various “big plans” for establishing a real city, Breland walks Sam and Emma through what the society actually does (throw parties and plan Europe trips for a niche, supposedly cool group of right-wing, libertarian rich folks), and why so much of this boils down to Silicon Valley’s reactionary obsession with being so overwhelmingly disliked. Harry First then explores the ongoing anti-trust case against Google, centered on their monopoly as the standard search engine, exploring the players behind the case and why there are so many parallels between this, and the most recent sizable Tech anti-trust case back in the early 2000s against Microsoft. Next, Professor First walks Sam and Emma through what is likely to be the major factors of the case and why it’s likely to go all the way to the Supreme Court, before wrapping up with a discussion on the evolution of the judicial world in recent years. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Big Three auto companies tying themselves in knots trying to outmaneuver the UAW, watch Nikki Haley dub herself a union buster, and explore the astonishing move by the senate to… remove the dress code for men. Greg Kelly freaks out over automatic voter registration but can’t figure out how to make it sound bad, Kevin from Lancing walks through the multi-generational history of the UAW and auto unions in Michigan, and Trish from Boston makes a case for acknowledging Marianne Williamson. Jacob from Alabama (of the Valley Labor Report) updates us on some non-Big Three UAW strikes, the GOP’s literal and figurative book burnings continue, and Dusty from North Carolina parses through the state of his state’s politics, plus, your calls and IMs! 3176 - Republicans Barreling Toward Government Shutdown; New UAW Deadline; IRS Cranks It Up
FUN HALF LINK HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuumkeuE590&ab_channel=TheMajorityReportw%2FSamSeder It's Newsday Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on the US and Iran’s frozen assets-for-prisoners swap, Canada’s almost-accusation of India’s assassination of a Canadian on Canadian soil, the GOP’s DOA spending plan, Rudy Giuliani’s newest lawsuit, and the IRS continuing their progressive reforms, before parsing through the UAW’s ongoing labor action, and the levels of support they’re getting from Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Next, Sam and Emma dive into the impending GOP-led government shutdown, tackling the fiasco of their internal negotiations, and why their approach to IRS reform would be a net expenditure for the US, before expanding on the specifics of Biden’s renovations of the IRS that the right-wing hates so much. They also dive into the anti-revolutionary anti-authoritarian ideology of the IDW, and wrap up by covering the upcoming special election in Allegheny, PA. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma take on Modern Monetary Theory, Donald Trump wishes the real Jews a happy New Year, and Rudy Giuliani’s meltdown continues. They also dive into the recently released Russell Brand allegations, and the serious evidence backing it up, before watching the right twist themselves in knots to defend Brand, while Megyn Kelly finally breaks the conservative mold and posits that not ALL women are liars. Zane from Minneapolis brings a NATO conversation into the fold, Majid from San Jose asks if Donald Trump is a fascist, and Marco from Memphis asks for help in his city’s upcoming mayoral election, plus, your calls and IMs! 3175 - "Personalized Medicine" & Its Threat To Public Health w/ James Tabery
Happy Monday! The whole MR Crew is back! Sam and Emma speak with James Tabery, professor in Philosophy at the University of Utah, to discuss his recent book Tyranny of the Gene: Personalized Medicine and Its Threat to Public Health. First, Sam runs through updates on a US deal with Iran, the House GOP’s impending government shutdown, Drew Barrymore officially un-resuming her show (making Bill Maher the biggest SAG Scab), and progressive action in the US, before diving into the UAW’s ongoing strike and the unconditional support coming in from the White House. James Tabery then joins, diving right into his personal experience working with and within the Personalized Medicine industry, and seeing how it can (with great expense) help patients, before stepping back to analyze the greater history of precision (personal) and genomic medicine over the last three decades, with the evolution of the Human Genome Project, and the rise of Human Genome Institute figurehead Francis Collins to the director of the National Health Institute. Briefly, he then discusses Obama’s Precision Medicine Initiative. Professor Tabery then walks Sam and Emma through the complicated drive behind the personalized medicine movement, with real believers (like Collins) used as lynchpins by the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical industries that would profit from a hyper-individualized and cure-based philosophy to medicine over a preventative and environmental-based one, before looking at how this has also resulted in a politicization of environmental considerations in medicine, and why – despite existing proof of environmental contributions to countless health issues – the US healthcare system remains far behind researching and addressing these problems. Wrapping up, Professor Tobery parses through the influence of this debate when it comes to research on race-based genomes for issues that could likely result from environmental factors. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch the Auto Industry leadership attempt to undermine UAW after the union essentially kept the industry alive in the wake of the 2008 Financial Crisis, also expanding on Biden’s support for the UAW and the inverse being expressed by GOP Presidential hopefuls. Rylie from West Philly and Corey on I-80 expand on the union discussion, the MR Crew discusses the unsurprising Russell Brand news (and those that came to his defense), and Teacher James from Iowa discusses the epidemic of anti-LGBTQ outing laws. Ronald Raygun gives his perspective on the positive impact on unions, plus, your calls and IMs! 3174 - UAW Strikes, Antitrust Trials Of The Century & Biden's Prospects w/ David Dayen, Shunte Sanders Beasley
It's Casual Friday! Sam speaks with David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam speaks with Shunte Sanders Beasley, former vice president of UAW Local 869 and worker at the Stellantis Stamping Plant in Warren, Michigan to discuss the UAW strike against the Big 3 automakers that started today. First, Sam runs through updates on US labor action, the impending government shutdown, Trump’s fraud trial, Hunter Biden’s indictment, COVID boosters, student loan debt, and a new old EPA ruling, before diving into Shawn Fain’s exceptional leadership as the UAW launches a strike against the big three auto manufacturers. David Dayen then joins, as he and Sam parse a little deeper through the UAW’s ongoing negotiations with the “Big Three,” how Shawn Fain more than lived up to his union president platform, and Biden’s perspective on record profits meaning record contracts. Expanding on this, Dayen and Sam then expand on the state of labor in the US, exploring why CEOs from GM to Hollywood keep making themselves out to be ghouls (accurate), the role of the NLRB and its recent CEMEX ruling, and how the negotiation process can still be shored up. Next, David dives into the DOJ’s ongoing case against Google as the conversation moves to anti-trust, before they assess rising poverty (and child poverty) rates with the US sunsetting countless welfare programs. Shunte Sanders-Beasley then dives right into the breadth of the UAW’s ongoing labor action, with her local plant standing at the ready to strike, and the solidarity nationwide as auto workers refuse to back down after a decade-and-a-half of severe exploitation. Wrapping up, Sanders-Beasley explores the incredible role played by union leadership in fighting for the workforce as a whole, and what external support for the UAW can and should look like. And in the Fun Half: Sam talks with Jackie from CT about the various obstructions to Biden’s student loan forgiveness (and how the CFPB can help), DeSantis continues his anti-vax crusade as Trump tiptoes between taking credit for the success and shirking responsibility for the failures of early COVID policy. Dan from Oceanside discusses his beautiful dream for the postal union, Lauren Boebert gets caught being a horrible person (likely thing for her to be), Matt Gaetz goes for McCarthy’s throat, and Robin from South Florida reflects on the inspiration that is Hot Labor Summer, plus, your calls and IMs! 3173 - Wage Theft In The Shadows; Airbnb Crackdown FINALLY Begins w/ Rebecca Galemba, Murray Cox
Emma returns for an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Rebecca Galemba, associate professor in international studies at the University of Denver, to discuss her recent book Laboring for Justice: The Fight Against Wage Theft in an American City. Then, she's joined by artist and activist Murray Cox to discuss his work on the project Inside Airbnb. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump’s Georgia trial, the expiration of UAW’s contract with the big three automakers, Mitt Romney’s retirement, Joe Manchin’s future, another attack on DACA, and the most recent environmental disasters, also parsing through her recent COVID-related absence and watching Rashida Tlaib speak in solidarity with the UAW. Professor Rebecca Galemba then dives into her exploration of the most prevalent form of theft in the US – wage theft – exploring the various blatant and more subtle ways that employers steal pay and benefits, and why the existing numbers on the issue are drastically underestimated. Expanding on this, Professor Galemba tackles the role of the often unreported exploitation of more marginalized communities, before parsing through the particular impact of wage theft on migrant communities, and the direct relationship between aggressive immigration law and lax labor regulation in forcing migrants into increasingly insecure situations economically and increasingly precarious work. After tackling the dynamic between the ongoing child labor crisis in the US and the labor exploitation of migrants, Professor Galemba wraps up by walking through the major labor progress (and regress) being made on the local and state levels, and what other policies – both in immigration and labor – should be pushed to continue to tackle this issue. Murray Cox and Emma then get right into tackling his ongoing project tracking Airbnb listings in major cities across the globe, starting with New York, where he previously worked on an anti-gentrification project and first saw the massive impact of Airbnb on local renting and housing markets. Cox then parses through the recent NYC legislation that has drastically reduced the number of short-term rentals in the city, looking at the various laws across the globe that it was inspired by, and what the major problems and limitations are with this type of legislation. They wrap up the interview by assessing what those of us outside of these projects can do to help. And in the Fun Half: Matt Binder hosts the show solo, as he and Bradley discuss the scabbing of Bill Maher and Drew Barrymore, Eddie from Ft Worth discusses generational voting habits, Never Back Down refuses to back down from their losing tactics, and Jamelle from Cleveland reflects on Michael Brooks, and what it takes to escape the IDW. Mike Lindell can’t deal with the softest of insults, RFK has a word with Matt, and Aaron from Georgia also discusses deradicalization, plus, your calls and IMs! 3172 - Policing Success, Public Safety Fail & Maine’s Power Move w/ Yohuru Williams, Michael Lansing; Mario Ariza
It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Yohuru Williams, historian and founding director of the Racial Justice Initiative at the University of St. Thomas, and Michael Lansing, Professor of History at Augsburg University, to discuss their documentary project on the history of the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) entitled "Overpoliced and Underprotected in MSP." Then, he's joined by Mario Ariza, investigative reporter at Floodlight News, to discuss his recent reporting on a November 2023 ballot measure in Maine that would create a non-profit power utility in the state. First, Sam runs through updates on the UAW’s work stoppage plan, gas prices and rent, soaring child poverty rates in the US, Wisconsin judicial politics, the new COVID booster, and the indictment of Memphis cops over the killing of Tyre Nichols, before parsing through Kevin McCarthy’s attempt to save his career via launching ready-to-fail impeachment proceedings. Professor Yohuru Williams and Professor Michael Lansing then join, diving into Minneapolis’ long history of unjust policing (and resistance) since the establishment of Minneapolis PD in 1870, and how much of this history has been swept under the rug and forgotten. Professors Williams and Lansing then give us a picture of the work behind “Overpoliced and Underprotected in MSP,” before they walk Sam through the process of this “historical amnesia,” why it must be addressed and fought against if we are to redefine “Public Safety” beyond policing, and what that redefinition could look like. Mario Ariza and Sam then dive into Maine’s upcoming referendum on purchasing the state’s investor-owned transmission and distribution utilities and turning them into a public-private partnership. They tackle the bipartisan frustration with the running and maintenance of Maine’s power grid, and why the fight to essentially nationalize the industry is largely non-ideological. And in the Fun Half, Sam checks in on the insane book banning hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee where freak witnesses AND senators felt it necessary to read passages from young adult books about strap on blowjobs. Steven Crowder discusses, again, I don't know if you can guess: no-fault divorce, and Walter Isaacson (and his good friend, Jake Tapper!) run insane interference for Isaacson's recent subject (and baby boy), Elon Musk. 3171 - The Chilean Coup At 50 w/ Marian Schlotterbeck
It's News Day Tuesday! But first, Sam speaks with Marian Schlotterbeck, professor of history at the University of California, Davis, to discuss the 50th anniversary of the U.S. backed coup in Chile against leader Salvador Allende. First, Sam runs through updates on Kevin McCarthy’s House leadership, a deal between the US and Iran, disaster in Libya, various labor updates, and a new COVID booster, before touching on JD Vance’s recent proposal to handcuff the US Government’s pandemic response until the 2024 elections. Professor Schlotterbeck then joins as she and Sam dive into the legacy left by Salvador Allende as a democratically-elected Marxist, walking through his evolution in Chilean politics and touching on his major policies over his three years in office before his killing in 1973. Then, they take a step back as Professor Schlotterbeck works her way through the CIA’s relationship to Chile pre-1970 – serving both as a Super PAC and Op-Ed machine for right-wingers – and how the Cuban revolution mobilized US intelligence to begin to act even more aggressively in South America, before expanding on the relationship of the CIA and Henry Kissinger to the corporate world so threatened by Allende’s presence. After wrapping up the story of the 1973 coup with a greater assessment of US involvement, Marion and Sam briefly look at US economists’ role in the violent Pinochet regime of the next two and a half decades. They conclude the interview by diving into the lasting effect of Allende on the Chilean left and the ongoing attempts to redraft Augusto Pinochet’s 1980 constitution. And in the Fun Half, Sam checks out UAW President Shawn Fain's appearance on CNN, the "Drew Barrymore Show" scab effort, Australian hospitality mogul (and freak) Tim Gurner discussing the recent "arrogance" of the labor market, as well as some selections from the PragerU kids renderings of what happened in the Civil War. Plus, your calls & IM's!
