In the beginning, they were called the slave codes and they targeted free blacks who might pose a threat by influencing Massa’s slaves to rebel. After the Civil War ended slavery’s abomination, they called them “The Black Codes” and they were intended for one purpose, control. Control movement, control labor, control the blacks who used to serve the whites as slaves. ‘The Black Codes” became a container, a sealed box that only it’s designers could open. The devastation produced by this novel coronavirus has displayed to the world the most revolting sight of all: the disproportionate, and very heavy death toll the ‘Monster of Dread’ is taking on people of color in general, and African Americans in particular. Perhaps the answer is to be found in that last statement, especially if those who would be free of oppression match the status quo’s power with power of their own; the type of strength found through embracing each component of what Jeffrey Miller calls “The Power Equation”.
