Upon leaving the US Navy Seals in 2017, Ephraim became heavily involved in humanitarian and rescue operations inside Northern Iraq against ISIS while volunteering with the humanitarian organization Free Burma Rangers. On June 2, 2017 he was shot by ISIS while conducting a rescue operation in ISIS-held territory inside West Mosul as a part of the Free Burma Rangers team. The team gained international attention when a video of the rescue went viral on the internet.
