Let's Talk About Something Else
Let’s Talk About Something Else is a podcast created by Judge James Donato of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, and Ambassador Jeff Bleich, the former U.S. Ambassador to Australia, who (for reasons of decorum and sheer variety) take on a wide range of issues about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness outside of politics. The hosts offer in-depth interviews and exchanges on a range of subjects where they have special expertise -- law, technology, foreign policy, and each other’s unique approaches to the world.
Ep. 3 Common Ground: Two Federal Judges on MLK Day
This special edition commemorates the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday with U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup and former Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court, Thelton Henderson. Judge Alsup grew up in a white segregationist household in Jackson, Mississippi during the height of the civil rights movement. Judge Henderson, an African-American born in Louisiana, graduated law school in California and was sent to Mississippi as a young civil rights lawyer working in Bobby Kennedy’s Justice Department. In the summer of 1963, both played a role in fighting Jim Crow segregation in that City. Although they never met then, years later their lives would intersect when Judge Alsup would be named to serve in Chief Judge Henderson’s seat on the Northern District Court. Hear their reflections on what led both of them to take up the mantle of Dr. King, their own relationship, and what they see for the future of race relations in America.
