On this episode, you’re going to meet a group of high school students who are passionate about music. They represented 12 different high schools from around greater Pittsburgh, and once a month they left school to travel to the Pittsburgh Symphony’s Audience of the Future program, where they were in charge of producing a concert. They visited Heinz Hall to attend Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra rehearsals, they chose the repertoire, promoted the concert, sold tickets, worked concert production, and produced a video and in May, they hosted an evening at the symphony that showed their love of music and the year-long work they put into the production. -- HEAR ME amplifies students' voices using MEDIA and TECHNOLOGY to CREATE a world where they are heard, acknowledged and understood, giving them the power to INSPIRE social change. www.hear-me.net/podcasts -- The Hear Me Project is an initiative of the CREATE Lab. This month, we have mini-podcasts created by students from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Magee Womencare International has a program that brings youth delegates to the US for two weeks to learn about youth leadership and civic engagement. The delegates come in 3 teams of about 6 students. Each team represents a different community and tasked with creating a Community Action Project that they will implement when they return home. The goal of Magee’s program is is to assist them in becoming integral leaders, decision makers and activists in their community, with a clear understanding that the power to create positive change lies within each of them. Hear Me had the pleasure of teaching a podcast and messaging workshop with these students near the end of their two week visit. The delegates worked in their community teams to write podcast scripts that shared the vision and plan of their Community Action Projects. -- www.hear-me.net

Recently, Hear Me partnered with Duquense University’s Youth Leading Change program to run a podcasting workshop with the Youth Leading change high school students. These are their podcasts. The YLC program challenges students and teachers to create projects in their schools that “upset.disrupt.ignite and transform” throughout the year. We met up with them for just one day where they participated in all kinds of master classes about youth activism. For this month’s podcast, we look to another big decision facing the City of Pittsburgh. In Spring 2015, we produced a podcast about the City’s process choosing the next Chief of Police. We documented the experiences that young people had with police and their criteria for the next Chief of police. This month, we’re exploring the search for a new Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent from the students point of view. After almost a decade serving Pittsburgh Public Schools, first as Deputy Superintendent, and later as Superintendent, Dr. Linda Lane is stepping down. -- Click here to view an interactive map of where the students go to school. For the 2nd year in a row, teens and adult allies from Allegheny County gathered for the Media Empowerment Student Summit. MESS, as it’s called, is a day of workshops that focus on media strategies and student empowerment issues. MESS is hosted by Hear Me and coordinated by a regional group of people, universities, and organizations that care about youth power. For our last podcast of 2015, we are highlighting the 10 minute talks from MESS.
