Jeff discovered the NJ Supreme Court Oral History project while performing research for an upcoming Bold Sidebar podcast with Justice Gary Stein. The Project is a partnership with Rutgers Oral History Project led by Jason Illingham and the NJ Court System. Lots of nuggets and lots of wisdom is shared directly from the Retired Justices. Here is a link to one of the many shows - best bet is to search using the entire project name in YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhojHtRuVZc

Judge O'Brien is my original mentor in the law. I served as his law clerk beginning in 1997. It was an amazing year for me. I met most of the people with whom I communicate with on a daily basis in that year. I was honored to speak at Judge O'Brien's retirement dinner and remain honored to call him a friend. The "retired" Judge remains as lively and sharp as when I worked as his law clerk. He arbitrates and mediates civil cases and does not let leave without a settlement or clear picture of where the case is headed. You can find him at Bathgate, Wegener & Wolf - http://www.bathweg.com/hon-thomas-e-obrien.html

This is Jeff Horn, and this is the Grateful Mentor podcast. I've spent a lot of time watching and learning from lawyers from all stages of their careers, from judges and retired judges and lawyers trying to figure out what makes them tick and what makes them successful. Not only financially successful, but successful in their career. What makes them enjoy going to work every day from the beginning of the career to those seasoned practitioners that have been added for decades, I believe I boiled it down to two things. Those successful practitioners are Grateful. They realize they've been given a bit of a gift to participate in the lawyer profession. That attitude of gratitude, those grateful lawyers and judges then spill over onto others and they become Mentors and they will mentor people for a minute or for a lifetime. Those same Grateful Mentors are great mentees.
