This week on The Forum Podcast: former Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ). News junkies around the country tune in each night to catch Don spar with political pundits and policymakers on CNN Tonight, which he anchors weekdays during prime-time.Friday night at the IOP, we turned the tables on Don by asking him to trade the anchor desk for the interview chair. What followed was a frank and wide-ranging conversation, co-moderated by Aisha Moodie-Mills, IOP Spring Resident Fellow ‘19, and Sam Kessler ‘19, a Harvard student and former Harvard Political Review president. Lemon also took several questions from the JFK JR. Forum audience in attendance.We titled the conversation: "Race, Media, and Politics." It was a timely and relevant conversation topic and a critical dialogue to be engaged in, as we conclude Black History Month and enter a Presidential election cycle.

This week, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio joined us for a conversation in the JFK Jr. Forum, moderated by Symone D. Sanders, CNN commentator and former IOP Resident Fellow S’18. In the Mayor's first-ever JFK Jr. Forum appearance, he shared his perspective on a wide range of topics, including the breaking news of the day: Amazon’s decision to end its plans to build HQ2 in New York City.   Over the course of the hour-long conversation, the Mayor answered questions from members of the Harvard community on issues such as policing, affordable housing, mental health support, the NYC subway, and his own interest in a potential White House run in 2020. Mayor de Blasio joins a long list of mayors who have visited the IOP to engage with students and share their experiences governing on the municipal level. Mayors from across the country have appeared in the Forum to discuss a wide range of issues impacting their communities, including rebuilding Detroit, MI with Mike Duggan, education reform in Chicago, IL with Rahm Emanuel, community policing with Annise Parker, IOP Resident Fellow S’16, of Houston, TX and Andrew Gillum, IOP Resident Fellow S’19, of Tallahassee, FL. These conversations are part of the Institute’s larger commitment to encourage students to pursue public service.

This address was from the Hutchins Center Symposium "Martin Luther King, Jr.: Life, Loss, Legacy" marking the 50 year anniversary of King's assassination.
