(Need help with the course? EMAIL ME - [email protected]) Welcome to my first podcast mini-series! Since the Elevate Your 8 Philosophy covers your work day, then I think it's time we started talking about the main tool you need to get the job that aligns with your values and talents. The Resume. Many people know how to create one, but very few people actually know how to format a resume so it elevates your skills, talents, and career highlights. I've been in the workforce for more than 30 years; and since switching to the resume format that I'm going to teach you in this series, I have NEVER had a failed job search. And I've ALWAYS been invited to interview. The key to a solid, functional resume is completely understanding where you've been and how to represent what you can do. Potential employers want to know how you can contribute to their organization - they DON'T want to look at a laundry list of your job titles. In this quick course, I'm going to give you the tools you need to re-boot your resume. So just give me a week, and your job search will be better for it! In this final episode I go into detail about how resume action verbs help tie that document together. They help with searchability, make your resume shorter, and give it more impact and WOW. My very favorite site for resume action verbs is from THE MUSE. I use this sight ALL. THE. TIME. Now that you are finished with the course, I want to hear from you. Here we are with Lesson Three: Skills and Categories. Most of the really hard work is done, believe it or not! Now that you've taken a peek at ALL the tasks you've performed in ALL of your jobs, and put them in various themed skill sets, now it's time to identify those specific skill sets you want on your rebooted resume AND how to define them. That's right, you aren't just going to list a bunch of skill sets and that's over. You've got to take this up a notch and show potential employers proof of all these lovely skill sets. Remember all those tasks you wrote down? Time to consolidate them into an overall explanation of a day-to-day aspect of your previous jobs and put them into the categories where they belong. In Lesson #2, you will be preparing to organize and synthesize all of these tasks into various themed groups that will lead into your skills and competencies. If you google "soft skills" or "job skills" you are going to find a wealth of sites giving you dozens and dozens of category options. Zety.com has a really good one. So, using the example from the previous episode, that Administrative Assistant might categorize her tasks into things like Event Planning, Administrative Support, and Customer Service. My resume includes categories like Management, Supervision, Fiscal Management/Budgeting, Events, Conferences, Marketing and Communications, and Teaching/Presenting.
