Happy Independence Day!  Here's a treat to help you celebrate - the final performance of the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West bck on July 2, 1971.  This fine recording captures the energy and enthusiasm of their performance that night. These first set songs are shorter, as was the norm during 1971but nevertheless I'm certain you'll enjoy them. Standouts include a great 'Me & Bobby McGee', a really fun version of 'The Rub', a somewhat slower 'Deal' and fo course the set-closing 'Good Lovin'. We'll have the second set next week..    Grateful Dead Fillmore West San Francisco, CA 7/2/1971 - Friday One      Bertha [5:47]   Me And Bobby McGee [5:38]   Next Time You See Me [3:50]   China Cat Sunflower [4:50] >  I Know You Rider [5:47]   Playing In The Band [4:54]   Loser [6:33]   The Rub [3:34]   Me And My Uncle [3:10]   Big Railroad Blues [3:35]   Hard To Handle [7:19]   Deal [6:13]   The Promised Land [2:46]   Good Lovin' [17:16]  You can listen  to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod070425.mp3   be sure and have a safe and happy 4th!

Here is the second set of the band's performance at the Forum in Inglewood California on June 4, 1977.  A long and fine set of music, luckily for us captured by a nice audience recording, results in one of the few Spring '77 shows that hasn't been commercially released.  This show features quite a few 'big' numbers - Estimated>Eyes, Terrapin, Playin in the Band, Franklin's Tower.. The Playin' sandwich is really nicely done,, as is the transitions throughout the set.  I hope you enjoy this one, my advice is to turn it up!  Grateful Dead The Forum Inglewood, CA 6/4/1977 - Saturday Two      Samson And Delilah [6:07]  Ship Of Fools [7:52]  Estimated Prophet [9:39] > Eyes Of The World [10:45] > Drums [2:#35] > Good Lovin' [5:30]  Terrapin Station [11:05] > Playing In The Band [9:40] > Franklin's Tower [10:34] > Space [3:34] > China Doll [6:09] > Not Fade Away [11:18] > Playing In The Band [3:31#] Encore      One More Saturday Night [5:12]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod062725.mp3   My thanks for your support of the Deadpod !

This week the Deadpod goes back to a crazy show that happened back on June 21, 1971, which was only the band's second performance in Europe. Apparently they were invited to a outdoor festival in France by a rich fashion designer, who paid for the their transport, equipment and entourage to travel to Europe to play at this free festival. Well they were put in up some kind of nice Chateau, and the festival was rained out with a huge downpour. They sat around for a day or two and decided to break out the instruments and play at the grounds of the Chateau for the locals and those who traveled with them. The result is what we have here.. apparently the Chateau had quite a nice wine cellar which was liberated for the event and the audience spent a good deal of the time throwing each other into the pool..  I'm not at all sure that there were 'sets' in this show - this is how deadlists.com broke it down so I went with that - we'll hear the remainder next week..     Grateful Dead Chateau d'Herouville Herouville, France 6/21/1971 - Monday One      Truckin'   Loser   Me And Bobby McGee   Next Time You See Me   Morning Dew   #Me And My Uncle   Hard To Handle   China Cat Sunflower >  I Know You Rider   Promised Land   Deal   Playing In The Band [4:27]   Big Boss Man [5:50]   Black Peter [7:53]   Bertha [5:30]    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod060625.mp3    Profitez du spectacle !

This week we present the second set from the band's performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley California on May 22, 1982. A fine recording that starts off with a tight 'China>Rider', to lead off a nice pre-drums set. 'Man Smart, Woman Smarter' always got the crowd fired up and we also have a Brent number, and a great 'He's Gone' into Drums.. post Drums highlights include a nice 'Not Fade Away' and a rockin' 'Good Lovin' to close the set. While it is a Saturday show, we get a 'U.S. Blues' encore !   Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 5/22/1982 - Saturday Two      China Cat Sunflower [6:51] > I Know You Rider [5:28] > Man Smart (Woman Smarter) [6:21]  Never Trust A Woman [5:51]  Lost Sailor [6:25] > Saint Of Circumstance [6:40] > He's Gone [10:#33] > Drums > Space [9:19] > Not Fade Away [10:05] > Wharf Rat [8:28] > Around And Around [3:48] > Good Lovin' [8:31] Encore      U.S. Blues   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod053025.mp3   Thank you so much for your kind support of the Deadpod!

This week we venture back to a favorite venue, the Greek Theater at the University of California at Berkeley for the middle show of a three night run in the spring of 1982. Astute listeners will remember that I played the first night of this run just about a year ago, and this show is at least equally worth hearing..  The band treats us to a 'Jack Straw' opener, which then goes into a nice long 'Sugaree' with plenty of fireworks from Garcia. 'Cassidy' follows, then a funky 'Tennessee Jed' into a 'New New Minglewood Blues'. As always, the 'Cumberland Blues' that follows is a rocker, but the 'Lazy Lighting>Supplication' combo is no slouch! The set closes with a smokin' hot 'Deal'.    Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 5/22/1982 - Saturday Set 1: Jack Straw > Sugaree Cassidy Tennessee Jed > New New Minglewood Blues Cumberland Blues Lazy Lightning > Supplication Deal    You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod052325.mp3  home cooking is always best....

This week's Deadpod takes us to Hanover New Hampshire, where the band put on a fine show back on May 5, 1978.  On a fine recording we get a nice rendition of the first set, with some excellent versions of 'Candyman', 'They Love Each Other' and 'Dire Wolf'. The band revs it up as always for 'Passenger', and the closing 'Lazy Lightning>Supplication' duo is outstanding as well.  We'll hear set 2 next week..    Grateful Dead Thompson Arena - Dartmouth College Hanover, NH 5/5/1978 - Friday One      The Promised Land [4:22] Dire Wolf [4:01] Cassidy [4:41] Candyman [6:40] El Paso [4:22] They Love Each Other [7:16] Passenger [5:00#] Brown Eyed Women [5:15] Lazy Lightnin' [3:38] > Supplication [5:34]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050925.mp3  Many thanks for your kind support of the Deadpod!

This week we return to Hartford Connecticut for the second set of the band's performance on April 17, 1982.  This set starts out with a smokin' 'Shakedown Street' featuring some exuberant Brent runs and interplay with Garcia. They then go into a top version of 'Sailor>Saint' which culminates in a bit of a Spanish Jam before leading into Drums and Space. 'Uncle John's Band' comes out of Space, not a usual occurance, and leads too into a hot 'Not Fade Away'. 'Wharf Rat' takes the ballad spot, and they rock out with 'Around and Around'; into a killer 'One More Saturday Night'. You might notice there are no stops between these second set songs on this night. The encore, "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' has some great Garcia vocals..   Grateful Dead Hartford Civic Center Hartford, CT 4/17/1982 - Saturday Two      Shakedown Street [15:03] > Lost Sailor [7:20] > Saint Of Circumstance [7:07] > Jam [5:28] > Drums [5:28#] > Space [8:50] > Uncle John's Band [9:00] > Not Fade Away [7:58] > Wharf Rat [9:41] > Around And Around [3:59] > One More Saturday Night [4:21] Encore      It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [6:59]  You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod050225.mp3   hope you have a wonderful first week of May!!
