Despite the perception (one that is new to us!) that Dads come out on top more often than Moms when it comes to custody and visitation of their children, the true disparity in the family court system is in favor of Mom. Dad is, more often than not, and we mean up to 90% of the time, given the preverbal sh*t end of the stick. Mothers are given majority custody and visitation over Dads with little to no evidence whatsoever. Dads, on the other hand, need to fight an uphill battle for as much. GAS is rarely studied and often overlooked in the court of law, but there is a beacon of hope out there as Pennsylvania sets the standard for equality when it comes to grandparents rights to custody of and/or visitation with their grandchildren - the only state to do so. Grandparents play an important role in the lives of their grandchildren, and must be afforded the opportunity to assist in the care and comfort of their grandchildren in order to ensure positive adolescent life experiences.
