Episode 19 - Coral Reefs and Fish ID - How you can get involved!

with special guest Madalyn Mussey, Education and Outreach Program Manager at REEF!

Coral reefs are called The Rainforest of The Sea and create biologically diverse areas in the ocean which keep it healthy.

One important aspect to watching the health of the ocean is the population of the fish.

REEF collects info on fish populations around the world in reef areas, and stores it in one publicly accessible database.

REEF.org has free fish ID courses you can take online, and then when you dive you can fill out a citizen scientist survey.

CALLING ALL DIVERS!

YOUR EXPERIENCE IS EMPIRICAL DATA.
Using the worldwide army of divers already watching the oceans, REEF.org has created a great way to start a database of what is happening worldwide.

I have done an online class with them, it's really fun, informative, and fascinating!

Check them out at reef.org

"REEF's mission, to educate and enlist divers in the conservation of marine habitats, is accomplished primarily through the Volunteer Fish Survey Project".
