# Writing as Therapy
Reading and writing have been proven to have immense therapeutic properties. Until we started talking about it we didn't realise how much this had come into our lives. Each of us have used writing as a therapy without our own lives as well as running courses with children and adults on writing themselves out of a crisis or using writing to promote self-esteem and self-confidence.
We hope you enjoy listening to our bookish antics as much as we enjoyed making it.

Being writers we are very creative people - which can be a challenge when it comes to the more practical side of our work - and specifically time management. How easy is it to stop multi-tasking and focus on what is important, to prioritise and schedule in work when all you want to do is sit down in a quiet corner and pen some stories. We all have a finite amount of energy to give towards the things we do, so how do we get the best out of the time we have?
With whisperings, questions, and shared writing.

*Showing and not Telling - a golden rule of writing. * This week the Whisperers are talking about writing tips using body language to show your reader how the characters are developing throughout the story. It allows the reader to judge for themselves what is going on and allows them to feel more part of the journey. It is therefore a style of writing that is more immersive for the reader allowing them to 'be in the room' with the characters. Chekhow said "Don't tell me the moon is shining. Show me the glint of light on broken glass." For example 'telling' might be: "Susan was frightened." Whereas 'showing' might be: "Susan tensed as she huddled under the covers. She gripped the sheets and held her breath as Lea read out the horror story she had just written." Thanks for listening to The Book Whisperers. This week's podcast is our first done remotely after hours (several) of set up with Hamish, our sound expert, who has the patience of a saint!
Our topic today is writing for an audience - both what we see our existing audience as at the moment, and knowing who they are, to writing for different audiences and whether you should change your writing to be commercially successful. We have produced pieces of work for audiences that we don't usually write for (with hysterical consequences).
We are also talking about doing our shopping as fairies!
If you ever need help with your audio book, or recording sound for anything, Hamish Campbell from Sound Sound is thoroughly recommended by all three of us. www.https://www.soundsound.co.uk/
