I laugh out loud along with Melissa in the things she describes and is amused at. So much fascinating history they are discovering and share in this very engrossing podcast! The two naturally dovetail their comments and are such fun people! (The one detraction is much use of ‘f-ing’ and ‘f-ed l’ for what could be more interesting and less offensive vocabulary. I still listen🙂👍🏻.)

I heard Melissa on The Weirdest Thing I Learned All Week podcast and was intrigued. I love the Bog House podcast! Melissa and Matt have a great banter and I feed off their enthusiasm. I hope when I’m in Philadelphia again, I can visit the theater. I can’t believe I made it to the last episode. I need more!

My daughter met you, Melissa, a few months ago at your place in Philly at your invitation because she has performed some of your music with a vocalist friend of hers. She knew right away that I’d be all over this podcast. She gave me your podcast card. I finally started listening this past week. I’m on episode 3, and I am now officially stalking your social media. I have a feeling this is one of those things where when I’m done catching up, I’ll wish I could do it again for the first time all over again.

If you live near Philadelphia, love colonial history, weird tangents or choral music, you will love this podcast.

My ADHD and love for geography really enjoy the genre twists and turns, Melissa’s enthusiasm, and Matt’s soothing voice as they take us through the poo history of their home and neighborhood. What a ride!

Very captivated and entertained by Matt and Melissa’s story. I grew up in Philly and I don’t think you need to be aware of Philadelphia history to find the podcast interesting and fun.

This podcast has been entrancing! From the scavenging, to the historical significance and tie ins, and then the remarkable serendipity of connections that turn up. I’ve been addicted to this since I found it from a mudlarking post. Super interesting, fun facts and I’m learning so much! Underground ice houses?!!!! Who knew archeology could be so entertaining? Matt and Melissa take us on a whirlwind tour of old Philadelphia and modern challenges as they research the historical objects dug out of privies found on their own property. I look forward to every episode!

I am staying up too late listening to The Boghouse! Such a fun and fascinating podcast. Thank you, Matt and Melissa, for sharing your story. I will be coming by on my next trip to Philly to see the property.

This is an amazing perpetual russian nesting doll of a podcast. Matt and Melissa Dunphy open up tangent after tangent of local Philly lore and history, American-revolution-era archaeology, dramatic interpretations of Colonial Americans, adventures in performing arts entrepreneurship and so much more. I had heard of what they found at the Callowhill property through the grapevine here in Philly, and when I tuned in, I did not expect so many parts of this story to delve into so many different areas. It's like Antiques Roadshow meets an HGTV renovation show meets mystery/murder thriller. What I love best about this podcast are Matt and Melissa's ability to contextualize the stories they've researched and find equivalent takeaways in modern day circumstances. Every person they reference feels real, and not like a passive academic account obscured by a 300-year old timeline. Things come full circle in surprising ways. Even with all of the lore that has preceded the Hannah Callowhill Stage, I can't wait to see what this property will become, and what stories we will see in the years ahead.

I think this might be my favorite podcast ever. The storytelling just draws you in. Their collective sense of humor and the way they play off of each other is just fantastic. I found this podcast when they had five maybe six episodes in the can. I binged those then I devoured tho other episodes the day they came available. Their laughter is infectious and I crave more. They are on hiatus now and I’m waiting with bated breath. I can’t wait for more episodes. More please Miss and kind Sir.

Right when I started to think these two couldn’t get any more interesting. So glad I have access to their awesomeness like this. Matt and Melissa are the OG hipsters; they were quirky and cool before it was cool. Of all the reasons to hit headlines, it ends up being amateur archeology lol these two are the most amazing and interesting people. Oh and the podcast ain’t bad either.

What do Monty Python, pedophiles, archeology, Amish drug dealers, magic, horror movies, colonial history, and puppet theater have in common? I loved Melissa’s piece that the Esoterics sang last week in Seattle. I’m enjoying all the stories and research about the Hannah.

An absolute must-listen! Matt and Melissa’s dynamic and storytelling is nothing short of awesomeness!

I love how Matt and Melissa switch back and forth while retelling their story. Not is this a fascinating tale, but they are also two wonderfully entertaining storytellers.

As someone who has also found some cool old stuff in old city philadelphia, this was a very well documented story that tickled my archaeology bones!

If you want a scripted story with a clear path, this is not the podcast for you. However, if you want to feel like you are at a party with some really interesting people and they start telling you this WILD story about buying a house, Matt and Melissa are just the friends for you. Being a Philadelphia transplant myself, I LOVE hearing about streets and history and locations that I recognize. Sure we have all these museums in the area that tell the history of the city, but this podcast gives it LIFE and mystery and a heaping dose of irreverance that frankly history could use more often. I'm thoroughly enjoying this podcast and can't wait to find out what happens next!

This podcast could really use a script or at least an outline. Matt is the stronger host here; Melissa gets on some tangents that are extremely off-putting and judgmental. I’d like to see Matt reign her in more, and I’d really like to hear less of them pushing their interviews and clearly trying to gain fame from it. A little bit of focus in outlines and scripting could really improve the quality of this podcast, which is largely insufferable until they finally get to the point (which is the history of the property and you don’t even know that until several episodes in!) The history is interesting but it takes a long time for them to get to it. I like hearing about their research once they got into it, especially when they read some quotes from primary sources. Being in Philadelphia, their property has a lot of great documentation and has a longer history than many homes in America.

Matt’s line at the top of episode 2 pretty much sums up the whole pod. Rollicking, profane, smart, hilarious ride-along with two of the most eclectic and interesting people to ever buy a magic theatre. “Sidebar” will become your new favorite word!

My wife and I have been listening as we work at home and it’s been an incredible journey. Looking forward to more!

So glad that I started listening. We own a couple of historic buildings in Burlington, NJ and I am going to find out if we have any privy pits. Addicted!!

Saw a link on 6abc News webpage and immediately subscribed. Listened in 2 days (while at work), had a convoluted drunken conversation with my husband about it and cannot wait to hear more. The way you were unable to stop digging and putting things together had me laughing so hard! It’s literally me! Have lived 30 minutes from Philly most of my life so the relevance to areas you speak of make it so much more interesting and fun! I dig you both!

Melissa and Matt are hilarious, engaging presenters of their totally bonkers story about how they ended up owning a magic theatre and becoming amateur archaeologists. I love their colourful, silly sidebars and hearing about all of their other weird and charming hobbies. Great for Philly locals and anyone who appreciates a good nerdy rabbit hole!

Subject matter (and the fact that I live in the area) is extremely appealing to me. This is a delightful and lovely couple telling their story, but unfortunately, I found it difficult- almost painful, to listen to them narrating it. So frustrating. Narration can easily make or break a podcast, and in this case, it broke for me.

On paper, “Young couple buys old theater and renovated it to be a work/living space”, sounds interesting but fairly cut and dry. In reality, this story takes some wild turns (Pedophiles! Magicians! Archeology!) that make for a fascinating listen. Matt and Melissa have a warm, engaging, accessible approach that makes it feel like you’re listening to two friends telling you a crazy story over a couple of beers. Definitely recommend!

I couldn’t even remember why I started listening to this podcast, but I got sucked right into their story telling. It’s full on fascinating, entrepreneurial fun. I was laughing out loud when they declared, at the end of the third episode, what the point of their podcast was. I’d listened for three hours already, simply enjoying the ride, and didn’t even realize we’d end up here, digging for historical treasures in an old poop hole.

Fashion yourself an amateur real estate developer, dramaturge, and/or archaeologist? Then this is the podcast for you! Melissa & Matt are absolutely charming in their telling of a series of events, which led them to literally dig up the history of America itself.
