Mary rushes to meet Jesus as He approaches Bethany. She says to Jesus that if He had been there, Lazarus would not have died; either a rebuke or a statement of faith. The mourners, around Lazarus’ grave, are weeping and Jesus weeps as well. The emotion behind Jesus’ tears is not explained, but we see the human Jesus. Surprisingly, some of the mourners criticize Jesus by saying, He should have kept the man from dying in the first place. Then we see the power of God when Jesus calls Lazarus out of the tomb. This event stirs up even greater trouble for Jesus.
