The BBC - Bigger Better Conversations
Big Bulo
Welcome to The BBC podcast, take it how you want it, but don’t get it twisted. Welcome to my table where, I’ll release about things that come to mind, but more importantly, like the acronym suggests, I want to have something bigger and better, which is a conversation with y'all. So whatchu’ gotta’ say?
Episode 6: Spilling Jasmine's Tea
In this episode, we spill a special kind of tea - one more personal and close to the vest - starting with the relationship we have with ourselves. At times, self-love is a cyclical journey of having self-awareness, a good metric and value system for assessing where we are, and being able to communicate with others and having them respond in ways that acknowledge what our own needs are. Intrinsically, we need to start by setting, acknowledging, and respecting healthy boundaries for ourselves and others. To highlight what this might look like, the tea we spill actually involves a significant conflict we had in the past. While it could have driven a wedge between our friendship, it was enlightening and probably the best thing that could have happened to help us learn and grow together. Bottom line: Self-love can be and individual or group effort, as long as while we are evolving as individuals, the relationships the serve as our support system evolve with us. Episode 5: Doc-menting the Evie-lution of Love
In the month of February, I’ve decided to focus these conversations on talking about the concept of “love” - self, platonic, intimacy, relationships etc. In this first episode, my friends Doc, Evie, and I talk about the evolution of their relationship and love languages. We start off with who they were as individuals, still working on themselves, practicing self-love, and learning from previous relationships, experiences, etc. Moving into how they became a complementing couple in a mutually beneficial relationship of growth and learning, we conclude that we bring our whole self into a relationship - for better or worse. For the relationship’s sake, we have the choice of bringing the best of ourself, while working on areas of opportunity. In the beginning, or break-in period, expectations on conflict resolution, mannerisms, and love languages were set. Over time, especially moving into life during the pandemic, these things evolved, as they should, and we explore how to keep growing and learning during unconventional times. Bottom line: Relationships are about equivalent exchange, growing, learning, and taking who we are outside the relationship and building something bigger and better together. Episode 4: #WCW with Alissa
On this official first of many #WCW (Women Crushing It Wednesday) episodes, my homegirl Alissa and I talk about what she's doing these days to crush it! As a full-time college student nearing graduation and working two part-time jobs, all while in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, there's a lot of uncertainty about what the future holds. She's got a lot on her plate but still grinding, surviving, thriving, and navigating reflective thoughts and how to be intentional and protective of her time and energy. In this time of change and transition from late-nights and hangovers to ambitions and long-term goals, we talk about how things, times, and people around us are changing and what kind of vibes, energy, and contributions they bring into our lives. Our conversation takes us into talking about relationships - platonic, intimate, romantic, etc. - and figuring out which ones are uplifting, supportive, and beneficial vs. toxic. Eventually, we come to the conclusion that of all the relationships that come and go in our lives, the one we have with ourself is the most important and where we need to be the most aligning and intentional. Bottom line: Time and energy are the most valuable things we can give to anyone; the most important person to start with is ourselves. Episode 3: My Condolences
Alongside countless brothers and sisters, I am saddened by the departure of a mentor. My heart, prayers, condolences, and love go out to his family and the legacy of a community that he leaves behind to celebrate his life and memory. SDSU, San Diego, the Filipinx-American community, and the world says farewell to one of its best.

Episode 2: #WCW with Casey
I originally intended to make this the “inaugural” #WomenCrushingItWednesday episode, however the conversation took a stimulating, interesting, and enlightening turn. We had just finished watching the Inauguration of the 46th President of the United States, the Honorable Joseph J. Biden Jr., so we found ourselves talking about the ceremonies, Bernie Sander’s mittens and memes, and how hopeful things look moving forward. Beating the long-dead horse, we compare the respective rhetoric, vibes, and ceremonies from one Commander in Chief to the next in what I would call a #WindsofChangeWednesday episode. Our conversation took us from very broad to introspection and reflecting on change, generation gaps, gaslighting, and accountability and how each of these aspects of life take place and are interrelated in our respective lives. Bottom line: Change is hard. It’s tough and difficult to get through. Nothing that’s easy is ever worth having and nothing worth having ever comes easy. Episode 1: Big Bulo x Lil' PLo
2020... 'nuff said. Was it a lost year? Was it a "lost" year? Going into 2021, we ask ourselves "2020 won?" In this episode, I catch up with one of my homies PLo and talk about how life and the pandemic be wildin' throughout 2020 and going into 2021. With physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health on the line, we talk about navigating, surviving, and grinding despite this pandemic as well as how performative allyship, denial of boundaries, selfishness, and gaslighting have dominated during a time when compassion and empathy should reign. That being said, we end up reflecting on accountability and how the pandemic has highlighted our relationships - toxic and uplifting alike. We ask the question, "Who are the people worth keeping in your corner?" In response, I harken back to a point in life when my character was unjustly questioned. In exploring and answering the question, we ask more like: "Who shows up for you? Who really knows you? Who really got you, no matter what and no questions asked? Who's there for you, for better or worse?" Bottom line: As shitty as things may be, there are always blessings in disguise.
